Optimal timing with stock engine??

I've heard that the stock timing on a TBI is 0* but I also read that you could get better performance by advancing that up to 4*. Haynes isn't telling me what the stock timing is, I don't have any labels under my hood that tell me either, nor do I have the manual for the car (6th owner, sheesh). Does anybody out there know?

I'm doing it tonight so I need a response like quicktime. Thanks alot.

Oh, one other thing, which WAY do you turn the distributor to advance the timing, clockwise or counter?

Base timing-the position the ECM uses as a reference for advance during operation- is set at 0 degrees from the factory. The tune up/emissions label under the hood should tell you this.
