Some people make there own spacers, some people buy them. I personally bought mine. I regret buying mine because it is an 1 inch high. What you need to find or make is a spacer that is only a half inch high. That way you won't run into any problems with your cables not reaching your tbi cause it is to high. I bought mine from Jegs, so don't buy a spacer from there. Try http://www.turbocity.com They probably have a .5 inch spacer available, but call and ask first. Spacer really didn't do much. Little better gas mileage, they claim 10 more pounds of torque but I didn't feel any. More like a helper mod. Helps out the other mods. Every little bit adds up in the end.

If you make you own spacer, what do you make it from?? metal? plastic??
Also, what exactly do you accomplish by adding a spacer?? (does it let more air in?? that type of info??)
Should I go with an open air element???

I would go with an open air element. I love mine. I got it from summit, mine is the 14x2.25 K&N but I will be changing the element to a 3" soon cause now I have that ASCD hood and it raises up in the middle so now there is room for a 14x3. People have made spacers from really HARD wood before. I don't recommend it. Seems like it would be a fire hazard to me. Check out turbocity, as for what they do, no clue really. Something about lengthening the pleneum. Sorry, someone will post about what they actually do.
