416 heads???
416 heads???
So I am thinking of doing exactly what pablo said ... to an extent.
I stupidly let a beat to hell 84HOZ5spdPOSI slip away that i coulda bought for $500. DUMB!
So i am thinking the easiest way to get the "416" heads is to go to an engine swap place and specify that i need "416" heads.
Is this the last three digits of the casting number or what??
Local junkyards around here are incredibly hard to work with so I can't go there. I called yesterday looking for either a 3.4x or higher POSI or any V6 rear for a 88-92 camaro (they are at least a 3.2x). They were
quoting me $250 and up for a pegleg V6 rear.
CRAZY!
So, how do I identify "416" heads. I figure I'll get a aftermarket 305HO knock off cam for regular hyd lifters and just slap it in my engine which has a factory roller cam.
Look, as best as I know the only difference between a regular versus roller cam is that the ramps on the roller cam can be more aggressive.

#416 are the last three digits of the casting number, they are real generic heads as they seem to have come on everything from 82-86 or so.
With junkyards you have to be sort of vague with them, they arent organized like a parts store many times they dont know what they have and if they arent sure they will quote you a high price since you are being so specific. Just ask if they have any 305 cylinder heads, dont ask for a casting number they dont care and when you do they realize you want that head for a specific reason= more money
same with a rear, i got my 3.42 open rear for 55 dollars. Just go to a local u pick and ask how much they sell rears for
and then you do the searching to see if its the gear ratio you want or not. THey dont like specifics
