Gear Drive for Cam
I have an LO3 Motor and am thinking about putting in Comp Cams Computer Compatible Camshaft for the 305 TBI. The new cam is not a roller so I was thinking about putting in a PJ Gear Drive (the noisy) to accomodate it. I have heard though that the noise makes the knock sensor think its knocking and advances the timing. Have any of you had experience with this?
theres been conflicting reports on this. I believe (not certain) Tim Burgess runs a gear drive on his 91 Z28 TPI that runs low 12s so obviously he doesnt have problems with false knock but you might want to ask him about it he moderates the electronics board
Hello
There are conflicting reports.
Tim and Willie both have a PJ nosiey gear drive and run the knock sensor without any problems.
I have the PJ noisey gear drive on my 85 Iroc and I had to disconnect my knock sensor because it was retarding my timing, I will be hooking up my autoX when I get a chance to see how much of a timing retard it is doing.
I have no driviablity problems with the knock sensor discounected either.

I'm running a Pete Jackson gear drive (noisy also) on my 327 with a knock sensor and it hasn't affected it any. The timing never changed at all.

they say not to use this on roller cams. Is that because of the roller cam or because most roller cams have computers and the computer(timing/knock sensor) is the thing that gets messsed upand not the cam?

Here is my 2 cents. Run a roller cam otherwise you'll be buying pushrods and lifters. Run a true roller timing set ($61 Cloyes). Much less expensive than the gear drive ($138 Pete Jackson). Prices from Summit.
Why run the gear drive on a mostly stock engine? I'm not sure of the benfits.

I dont know about anybody else, but I almost got one for the noise alone. Glad I didnt now, since I might or might not have had problems with the knock sensor. I dont like guesswork.
