S.E.S light code 24
S.E.S light code 24
I have an 89 305 TBI with engine type Eand I have been gettin error code 24. Since I dont' have the book with the codes I have no clue whut it means. I notice I get this code when I am cruisein down the high way about 60mph and up. When I slow down..it pops on. I have tried to clear the computer of the code thinkin maybe it is a glitch...but it is still there.....any one kno whut it is....and how to fix it?
This website has a tech section with description of each code etc. Look in the FAQ under Misc. and all the codes are there
that is the main page of WWW.THIRDGEN.ORG
check it out its full of great info

Does your car seem to run fine otherwise. I have an 89 TBI as well and I had a similar problem a while back. When I was cruising around town, no problem. But when I was out on the highway cruising around 60-70mph the "service engine" light would pop on. That S.O.B. is bright isn't it. Stupid thing was annoying. Here's where my situation differs from yours, my computer was indicating a code 32 fault which turns out to be an EGR fault. Sure enought the EGR was bad. The diaphragm had dry rotted, and wouldn't hold vacuum. A trip to the dealer for a new one it was fixed. They are a cinch to install. The light has not come on since. Let me know if this helps. Also, to answer your original question: Code 24 VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor open or short circuit problems. TBI Camaros are limited to 115mph by a governor, this can be disabled and would probably cause your fault code. Does anyone know where the VSS is located?
Hope this helps

Yeah I put the EGR valve in last spring...mine was causing my car to stall out. But our problems are similar. 60-70 mph hit the brakes to slow down....and BANG...she pops on. I have no idea about this VSS...where to find it or whut ever...tryin to find a tech article. But hey...ya didnt' help me but you prolly helped some one..and that is whut this is alll about

Ever figure it out? I remember looking at a mod to disable the VSS, it stated that the light would come on while the VSS was disabled. If you are still having trouble, I'll try to find it and get back to you. Doesn't look like anyone else knows about the VSS. If they do, step up and help this guy out.

Code 24 is for the VSS circuit. You have a permanent magnent generator mounted in the tailhousing of the transmission (the actuall Vehicle Speed Sensor) and it creates an A/C voltage, with the frequency variary as speed varies. This A/C signal is sent to the VSS Buffer to have the signal changed, and distributed. The buffer sends the signal out to the speedo, ECM, cruise control module, etc...
If the speedo is working when the light comes on, chances are it isn't the VSS itself. If it was the VSS, the speedo would drop out, and cruise would disengage, etc...
It would have to be the buffer, the ECM, or the wiring in between. It still could be the buffer, it could just be internally at fault, not sending the signal to the ECM, but to the other components.
If the speedo does drop out, then it probably isn't the ECM, but then it could be the VSS. It could be an intermittant open in the sensor, or the wiring could be rubbed through causing it to ground out.
Many variables, I hope this sheds some light. Good luck.

Simon, I tried to look for that tech article about the VSS. Nothing really yet. I am either reading the wrong one or, it is just over my head. The car still runs fine, except when the stupid light comes on. GMTech, when the light comes on I notice my Speedo goes loopty loop. I have had people pace me and I am either going 10 miles faster or about 10 miles slower then whut the needle is saying. The crusie control thing....it does play around with that. Once the light is on i can't get the car back in to crusie till the light turns off. If anyone has a real simple way for me to figure this out I would owe you my first born ( just kiddin) But I would greatly apperciate.

GMTech...is there a way for me to figure it out which one is bad, the VSS, the buffer or the Wires. If there is no easy way is it easy to replace them myself or should I take is somewhere?
