I took the doors off, removed door panels etc, and then rolled the window all the way up. I took a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade and enlarged some of the holes on the inside of the door. The I laid the door down on old tires and filled the door almost up to the impact beam w/ water. I then took my torch and cut the beam in the center, then cut it loose close to where it connects on each side. Then I worked these out from the holes I enlarged. The water will keep from warping your doors due to the heat.

I have heard of ppl acually cutting the whole inside of the door loose all except from the top, bending them upwards, removing the beams, then welding the inside of the door back on -- but I opted not to do it that way.

I didn't warp my doors and they work fine, they are a lot easier to shut and are a lot lighter.

1FINE8T9- Side impacts would be VERY bad, I suppose, but I have 8 point cage that would probably do as good as the original impact beam.

Basset, how much did the beams weigh?

and any idea on whether the earlier thirdgens had lighter beams? I notice that my 84z's doors seem to be lighter than my 89, they swing easier

They weighed around 35# each est. I didn't actually weigh them, but I weighed the car after I removed them and a few other things and I saw about about a 85# difference and the other stuff weighed about 15#
