No the Iroc and GTA and TPI T/A's didn't have speed limiters. I believe only the TPI's weren't limited, although not 100% positive. All I know is mine is limited to 115 (easily bypassed though) and my old GTA wasn't (reached 152 on the street and will never, never do that again).

Mine's an 89, and it will peg out the needle on the trip odometer button down past 115. It would do even before i modifyed anything, so I don't think mine is???

this topic has been addressed several times on thirdgen. the most likely answer is yes, all tbi third gens were speed limited. the most common concensus to this is that the tires didnt have the speed rating to handle non-governed speeds(and no matter how much one swears that theirs came with z rated tires and its "one of a kind" theyre wrong, you couldnt get them, bought mine new and tried and couldnt) some people say that theirs cuts off at 110 some at 115 some as high as 125 but the vss is set at 115. thats in the prom coding book. so the difference in speed is actually a miscallibration in the speedos. the tpis were not limited as ive had both 305 and 350 and both would run to the rpm limit stock(south georgia and outback roads so you know i tried) the fastest ive heard of a stock tbi going with just the vss disabled is 140. that speeds not to hard to believe considering the rear gear in our cars stock. ive been wrong before and surely will again but ive been round and round on this one and this is the info ive uncovered as to speed limits.

My formula came with V rated tires stock, it's on the build sheet, and on the door label.

My car for some reason does not have a speed limiter. I've had it passed 125 that was checked on a lydar laser gun by a state trooper. And all rs and firebirds with 15" or 16" came with T speed rated tires Z-28 Formulas etc... range from T-Z most z rated tires were goodyear gatorbacks. Most of the tires corresponded with what your speedo said it was capable of.

swap to a 7747 ecm. only takes cutting 2 wires and swaping 2 others. and you not only loose the speed limiter but you can also burn chips too. you can burn chips for the current ecm but it is not as well mapped out yet.

When I ran my RPO code, is says QLC: Tire All, P245/50ZR16/N BL R/PE ST TL HW4

So what you are telling me is that GM tells me Im getting Z rated tire in the RPO codes, but they are not really Z rated tires.

my 88 never had a speed limiter and all it came with was the base 305 TBI motor and the 15" GTA look-a-like rims. I don't think any 88's had a speed limiter. I thought they didn't start that until 90 or 91 but a few with 89's proved me wrong on that thought.
