Help: Which open element filter will work best?

I'm going to take off the stock aircleaner this weekend and put on an open element one.. I know I'm going for a K&N.. My question is this, will the triangle K&N aircleaner fit if I get rid of the gold spacer ring? (Its 3" thick and has a flat base) Also, whats the best way to get rid of that ring?

I think if not, the 3" thick round drop base will fit fine...

I'm also worried about hood clearance, I have the stock hood.
Thanks.

I just put a 14"x3" K&N filter on my '91 RS, it has a drop pan. My wingnut hits my hood when it closes. It fits, but it is snug.

Eclipse speakers all around w/ 10" tube powered by a Alpine V12 in back
K&N filter w/XStream flow lid - It is sweet!!
Future: 2" Cowl hood

Are you talking about something like this? It's an Edelbrock, but it comes with a K&N filter. Fits perfectly, clears the coil perfectly too.

I put the IAT sensor under the MAP sensor on the firewall.
