Info on 305 Vortec...

The factory version of the 305 Vortec is called the L30. The HP is 230Hp stock and the 350 version is 250Hp stock.

I dunno the stock Torque. Maybe someone else can find them.

This is the replacement crate engine: http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...tid=127&pid=98

The more well known vortec is the L31, the 350 version. Pablo, me, and some others were looking for L30 heads that we could bolt on with out needing to have them milled like the popular L31(350) version. Unfortunately when we finally found them it turn out they cost too much.

According to Jeff@SDPC:
"There are L30 vortec 305 heads. They are part number 12529180. They do not flow as well as the 350 heads, but they do have the 58 cc chambers. They cost $754.66 a pair. The 350 vortec heads flow better cost less and can be milled to get the compression needed."

So it turned out that the 350 Vortec heads were about $350 less because of the mass distribution of them. The L31 heads flow better than the L30 heads but need to be milled to get the compression back up. When your shortblock goes south you can keep the heads and put them on a 350 if they don't need replacing yet.
A combination that I would like to try is the Vortec heads, the Edelbrock Victor Jr. vortec intake, 670 Holley, and maybe an LT1 or LT4 cam.
Since I dont have TPI I'll probably do this setup on my next engine which will be 350+ sized.

Sweet Tas. Didn't know that. So they are swapable to a 350 eh? Thats some info if anyone is going to build there 350 from the block up. They can throw on those heads for now on their 305 and throw them on there 350 block when they do that. Cool. But are they great heads for a 350 or are the better heads like Fast Burn or somethin that are better?

They are all small block chevys. The milled heads(along with about everything else) are swapable. you just need to make sure the compression on the 350 is then not too high.

IMHO Fast burns are the best now short of maybe some AFR heads. Popular Hot Rodding compared L98 heads, to L31 heads, to Fast burns on a 350.

350 with 750 carb and some fat looking headers:
L98: 356 HP
408 TQ
L31: 390 HP
Fast burns: 432HP

the Vortecs are just like the Fast burns combustion chamber but the heads are made of cast iron and smaller valves.

Ok, cause I have heard Fast Burn are good heads. I see GMPP put them on their ZZ5. Makes less torque than the ZZ4 though. 385hp and 385lbs of torque compared with the ZZ4 with 355hp and 406lbs of torque.

no the stock L03 exaust system sucks. it has dual 1&3/4 exaust manifold outlets to a single 2.25" intermedieate pipe. if you have exaust and an open elemnt on the L03 you are well into 200Hp territory for sure. To use Vortec heads you need a vortec intake and if you want to use your TBI and not carb on that intake you need an adapter plate. Like I said the 305 (L30)vortec heads aren't worth the money.

With my mods I should be over 180Hp or 190Hp for sure. I raced a 4.3L Vortec S-10. I just pulled on him on a LONG street.

Thats sweet. I raced a Dodge Stealth R/T rated at 222hp and I beat him by 1 1/2 car lengths. I didn't have some of the mods I had before. I think at the time, I had the exaust, no headers, had the pullies, geez, I can't remember, it was a cool race though. Oh, i know I had the 3:73's at the time and the tires. That helped. It was a race up to 85mph. It was cool.

those 4.3 vortec s10s are quick! especially with the 5-speed. my friend has one, and it screams. he has the open exhaust with no mufflers like the full sizes have...sounds pretty good.
