Should I TBI To TPI my Suburban?
Should I TBI To TPI my Suburban?
Sorry to post questions about Suburbans here but,
I may be able to get ahold of a rear ended 87-88 IROC 350 TPI 70,000 miles.I drive an 89 GMC Suburban with a 350 TBI 200,000 miles.Sometime this year i am going to have to decide what to do with my engine.(It has this phantom tick)I dont know what is involved in switching from TBI to TPI in my truck but have been reading what is involved in doing this to an F-body.
I am basicaly looking for opinions here.I put about 80-100 miles on my truck a day(90% freeway). Will my TBI "unit" fit a TPI's heads?(ports/asperation). Or should i just go ahead and switch completely to TPI?I am personally leaning towards useing my TBI on the TPI 350 block/heads.What problems (LOL) do you guys know i will run into? ie: TBI doesnt push/pull enough for the TPI 350 ect.
Thanks , Later...
89 GMC Suburban 350 TBI,700r4, 4.10's, 33"BFG
"Almost" 3/4 ton 4x4.

Personally, I think if you decide to use the IROC engine (L98 i believe). I would go ahead and use the TPI. I have heard that TPI has more low end torque than TBI, and that would probably be real good for your big truck. Dont quote me on this, because some guys on here will probably try to rip me apart for saying this, but I think TPI gets better gas milage too(not sure), for you 90% highway driving. My main point being the IROC engine was made for TPI so stick with it, or have your truck engine rebuilt. That is my opinion.

I agree on the TPI. Even more if you plan on wapping that L98 in stock form. It was made to run on the TPI, thats the way to keep it.
Plus, it will be kinda unique, a TPI suburban. Dont see many of those.

a Suburban needs TORQUE so do this: 383, Edelbrock TBI intake, Trick Flow 23* heads, and the rest of the edelbrock TBI performer kit(cam & headers). Last 383 TBI buildup I read about had 450 TQ.

thats what i was affraid of,How much of a pain in the a$$ is it to completely switch over to TPI?(wiring). And where do i find this info?I think there is a wireing kit for this from "painless wireing co",but not 100% sure. Also i dont have the money to "Beef up" the TPI.The only thing i will do to the TPI 350 is replace the stock manifolds with headers/duals.I too think it would be nice to have a TPI in my Burb, but if its more of a pain to do this swap than to rebuild i dont want to mess with it.Like i said, this is my everyday vehicle and i dont want to run into the "oops forgot about having to do that" senerio.
The only vehicle i have seen a 350 TPI swaped into was a TOYOTA Fourunner 4x4.I didnt get to ask him what was all involved in swaping it in but it did look very nice. Thanks for the warm welcome guys.... keep the info coming.....

Oops i almost forgot,
My truck is completely stock( other than the 3/4 ton axle swap i am in the middle of).And the Converter seems to be missing.Wonder where that went?

I dont see how its going to be a problem considering your getting it "complete" out of a car All sensors and wireing will be there, that would kind of make it plug and play. The only problem I would forsee is the harness not being long enough to reach your firewall, there are ways to deal with that. And second you would need a high pressure fuel pump to run the TPI. Painless harnesses are a pain in the *** . But hey!, if you dont use it you can sell me all of the sensors and the ECM!

Hehehe, I have a 89 GMC Suburban with the same miles and same engine. I've thought about doing a swap similar to this before to for when the old 350 does (if it does) die. I would go with the TPI setup, it would be cool! But seriously, I think you should use the TPI setup, if you already have it then use it, or spend more money to make the TBI just as powerful, but that would be a waste. There's tons on room under that hood so it would be an easy swap, get some headers too, that would be sweet. You'd probably get better gas milage on the freeway too.
