Distributor hits open element!!!

I have a 1991 Firebird, 305 TBI. I tried to install an open air element (GM Performance, and an Edelbrock). Both of them refused to fit on the TBI unit, without hitting the Distributor to the point that it would not even begin to fit. I belive that they where both drop models. Also, i have a stock hood, and it will have to conform to it. What am i doing wrong?

get a magic marker and write "non-drop base" on your hand and go back to the store.

If you must have a drop base, you'll have to make a careful "dent" in the base of the air cleaner where it rubs the distributor. I had to do it on my last 305TBI. Won't affect performance or do any damage, just kinda hokey.

Just out of curiosity, what diameter air cleaner are you trying to install? And is the coil built into the cap of your distributor? Thanks.

I was just wondering how similar your setup was to mine. I put the delco drop base 14x3 on my car, but its a carb'd camaro so that wouldn't really mean anything to you. So I've pretty much been useless. sorry. For what its worth though, it fit pretty good on my car...
