How can you tell if timing needs to be adjusted?

Im doing a tune up on my car. Well little by little at least...bought it used so im trying to go through everything that needs to be gone through. Im wondering if you have to adjust your timing at every tune up or if not how you can tell when it needs adjustment. I know this might be a remedial question...but hey, we all got to start somewhere.

Get a timing light and check it. That's really the only way to tell. Stock specs are for 0* advance, but you get better high end power with a bit more. I have the best luck with 4*, but experimentation is the way to go.

Yup. The only way is to check it with a timing light. If you don't have on, you can get them pretty cheap. Don't waste money on the shiny, high dollar ones. If your still at stock, try advancing it just a hair like Andy said and you should notice a small amount of performance gain.

You should Check the timing at every tune up. Also, it helps to clean off the balance and use some white out or white paint on the timing marks to make it easier to read. Make very small adjustments with the Distributor, and always double check timing after you re-tighten the distributor hold down to make sure you didn't move it on accident.
