fuel pumps

Who makes a good high performance TBI fuel pump? Sorry I don't have a 'maro or 'bird, this is for my '93 C1500. I have a 408 with vortec heads, XE268 cam, headers/dual exhaust, 454TBI, and Fastchips chip. The engine really likes about 16 or 17 psi, but my current stock Delco pump (replaced with motor about 8 mos ago) only puts out about 15 psi. For the first few weeks, it would pump close to 20 psi if I wanted to. Now it stumbles with quick throttle action, and I have the TPS up at .65 volts. I need something that can pump enough to where it always is bypassing some, instead of burning all of it as quick as it gets it. Have heard of a vette pump that some use, but don't know anymore about it. Brands, part #'s, and prices would be great. I know about Turbo City's pump, but would rather avoid dealing with those jerks. Thanks.

Wow-great link! Thanks! So what is the best TBI pump from Walbro? Is it the FPG001? What can it actually put out for pressure just before the regulator? What one are others using?

that is a great site! What is the flow rate of a stock TBI "in tank" fuel pump. Which one would flow enough to support new heads, intake, headers? I am suprised there aren't many more out there because I have always heard that when you start doing your mods (on 305 TBI) you will have to start with the fuel delivery first.

SCRA: Any of the pumps will work fine with your TBI. It's just a matter of how much capacity you need. Check out his FAQ on the Intank pumps page.

Shifty: The stock EP126 TBI pump delivers 29gal/hr at 0 psi. The rating drops as FP goes up. When you add fuel lines and filters, etc to the equation the rating falls farther.

I called Arizone TPI (Walbro dealer) and asked about my application and what I felt I needed. He (Ken-president) told me about an inline Walbro pump that they use on all their carb to TBI conversions. The factory pump will then feed the new external, inline pump. They splice into the factory pump wire, so they are both on the same circuit. This is also how they do TBI to TPI conversions, only with a stronger pump. He stated that the factory pump puts out about 16-18 gph, and this Walbro pump puts out about 36 gph. Said I should be able to run 25 psi if I wanted to (don't worry, I don't). I think he said it deadheads at about 30 psi.I didn't get the part #, but it's $125 plus $5 for bracket/isolator. I'll let everyone know the part # and how it works when I get it.

I'm not an engineer and I don't have experience with adding an external pump onto a TBI intank pump. That said I will tell you I would NEVER pump through an intank pump in a HiPo application, especially if the intank pump is dying. I have disasemmbled them and found that there is a restriction in the pumps outlet. Similar to a barrel type valve. The outlet of the TBI pump is restricted to MUCH less then 3/8". Any how that's just my 2 cents.

Trivia: Did you know that the pumps electical parts are directly exposed to the fuel? The fuel is pumped around the pump motors armature, comutator, and brushes.

That's a scary thought. I think i'll invest in a little fire extinguisher for my car. As far as the fuel pump, the guy that sells them explains really well which fuel pump to use but they are for EFI cars. Our TBI cars don't require as high flowing pumps as the efi cars. With that said, would i be safe to get a 255 ltr/hr pump for a mildly stock tbi camaro? or is that way too much for my fuel lines? would the 190 ltr/hr pump be good enough in case i want to upgrade to a 350 high performence engine later on?

Never mind my last post. If the stock pump flows 29 gal/hr at 0psi and the 190ltr/hr pump flows 56 gal/hr at 0psi, than the 190 pump should be way good enough even for a 454 tbi. I think i'll order the 190lth/hr intank pump.

I installed the 255l/hour pump last fall and have had zero problems with it. Figured when I go to twin turbo I'm going to need all the go juice I can move...
