What's involved with doing a tuneup?
Well Pablo flamed me for not doing my own tuneups. What all is involved and how hard is it in a car with full CA smog equipment and AC? Guess I must be a real looser for not wanting to do it
Can't even change the plugs without getting under the car...I've tried to do that at least.
I've worked on cars that are easier to work on. Like my friends '68 Camaro and my other friends '88 GT mustang. there is just SO much more room in those cars. My website says what we did on the camaro. On the Mustang we did full exaust, intake, and ignition.

Don't take it personally. Working on cars isn't for everyone.
Basically a tune-up consists of cleaning and/or replacing quickly worn parts (cap, coil, rotor, plugs, rotating tires, changing oil, topping fluids, battery terminals, tstat, air filter, etc.) and adjusting various components back to spec. (TPS, timing, steering, blah blah).
Less often, more involved jobs come in like changing the tranny fluid, diff. fluid, etc.
I love working on my cars, I just hate diagnosing problems that come up that have similar symptoms as other problems (like the fuel problem I'm dealing with right now!)

any monkey can replace stuff... can you explain the TPS and timing more?
As much as I love cars, they are NOT my priority (even though thinking about them takes up a lot of time
) Priorities include: 1. school i.e. Engineering degree, 2. work, 3. having fun(cars included

Why does that not surprise me that Pablo would flame someone cause there not as mechanicaly inclinded as he is.
Doing a tuneup is fairly easy though. I don't see why u would need to mess with your TPS though. It should be fine where it is now. If you wanted to boost ur timing all you would need is a timing gun and know how to use it (comes with instructions). People usually set their timing on our kinda cars at 6 degrees. The stuff Jza said about the cap/rotor,fuel filter, coil, wires, plugs and air filter are all very simple stuff to replace. I don't know why u would need to change the thermostat or change the oil though. Thermostat shouldn't be changed unless it isn't working or u wanted a cooler stat. And oil is changed every 2500-3000 miles anyways and tuneups are not done every 3,000 miles so if ur oil was already changed 1,000 miles ago, you don't need to change it now (common sense). Check the fluids though like Jza said. Including the rear end fluid. Just take the plug out slowly and if nothing starts to drip out, dip ur finger in the hole to see if there is any fluid. If not, fill it up. And maybe use a fuel injector cleaner when ur all done, just to clean things out inside the fuel system. I think thats it. Oh and check for codes maybe. See if your O2 sensor may need to replaced or maybe other sensors. (just do the paper clip thing) and also maybe spray some carb cleaner down the barrels. Clean up the insides.
