cam selection on a 305
cam selection on a 305
i am about to purchase a set of 58cc vortec heads for my 305. they will be rebuilt by a machine shop including acid bath and magna fluxed(?) what i need to know is what cam would work. this motor is in front of a new 700r4 with a aftermarket shift kit. i will be running a edelbrock rpm intake and the stock TBI for now but will upgrade to the holley TBI. i know i will need the adapter for the intake. also what type of rockers i.e.. stock or roller. all inputs are greatly appreciated even if you say i should go with a 350 to which i say if that is what i wanted i would have asked about a 350.

For starters, choose a cam profile that will make most of it's power in the rpm range you expect the motor to spend most of its time.
i am actually looking for more power on take off and a little more throughout the power band. i still want it to iddle with out sounding like it is going to die. i guess i am saying it is going into a 88 formula and i want it to be faster maybe i didnt answer your question if not i am sorry.
Alright the heads are 14014416...80-86...305..........1.84"/1.5" valves, 58cc chambers what cam would you recommend with these heads for a really good power setup mainly looking for torque. any replies is greatly appreciated.

Is it going in an F-body? Are you willing to change the converter? What rear gears? What is your main use for the car? Do you have a power level you want to acheave? How many miles on the motor, and how high are you willing to spin it?
We need a lot more info, it is probably best if you describe your situation. I could pick a cam that will make 350 hp, but it might be spinning up to 7k, and not what you are looking for.
Also, will you be tuning it? Stock computer, or EBL?

it is going in to a 1988 firebird f-body. i am planning on using a factory rebuilt 700r4 with a 2800 stall convertor and a trick shift kit with reverse valve body. reaer gears are going to be 3.73. i want the car to be a ballsy toy that i can drive daily. the bottom is staying stock so i would rather not go above 6k. i will be having a custom prom cut for it.

Then you'll want a cam that makes power at lower rpms (5000-5500 max). Start there and read all about cam selection and figure which of those cams you'd prefer. Things to consider are max lift (with 1.5 or 1.6 rockers), LSA (probably pretty modest), duration (not too much but not too little), etc. That stall might be a bit much for what you want. As far as rocker arms, if you're changing you want rollers.

i thought he said he had vortecs ?
but 4416 heads are not vortecs lol. they are just plain jane common smogger 305 carb heads with baby valves in them
i hope he palns on putting in bigger valves and at least doing port and bowl work to them ?? otherwise theres no real point in anything but a stock cam..
im confused ?

alright i am stuck between a 600 edelbrock carb and the factory TBI I will upgrade this later. I just don;t wanna do a hell of a lot of wiring and emissions changes until they decide on smog testing or not. and i think the 416 head are the HO ones but i am not sure. i call comp cams and they recommended a decent cam for the carb but only had a barley stepped up stock cam for the tbi. so here in lies my quandry, do i do extensive wiring or do i stay with a almost stock motor? i am also going to be staying stock on the rearend and tranny for now money got tight lol but then it always does does'nt it. but right now i have a tourqer II intake but i was told i need to swap that for a rpm intake but i dont know. i am probably just going to go ahead and do a carb swap. any help or suggestions will be appreciated

Yeah, 416 are HO heads, they'll be great if you get some work done to them. I have a set that I am planning on putting on my Firebird.

416 heads are pretty decent when ported. I would not use them unless they are ported and sized with larger valves. On top of what Dewey asked do you have the anility to burn your own chips? If not than I would not touch the motor until you have that down.
i actually have a good friend who can cut the chip no probs there he has done quite a few for other friends of ours with no issues. now i have a question i am serious so please no flaming. i am thinking of just doing the exhuast from headers out the back and the heads and factory intake with the tbi holes upened up a little and a custom chip what issues can i expect to run into. i got a 4 bolt main 350 engine given to me and i am eventually going to put the 305 in to my S-10.
