Are there 305-TBI IROCs???
Are there 305-TBI IROCs???
Some guy is trying to sell me a 305 TBI IROC. I wrote him that such things don't exist, its either TPI or EFI? in '89. Am I right or am I jsut ignorant?
And if I am wrong what advantages does a 305TBI IROC have over a 305TBI RS???
THx

There were 305 tbi iroc's built. It was the base engine in a iroc. You had to opt to get the tpi.

Yeah there actually were IROC throttle body equipped cars. The L03 was the base engine for the IROC from '88 until the IROC's demise in 1990 and 1/2. I personally own an '89 vert IROC with the 305 TBI and the T-5.

Was fairly common where I'm from. Got the IROC a rep for being a slow car too just like the RS.
The advantage for TBI is better gas mileage and a more reliable car for most of those years. Early TPI cars tended to have more Mass Air Flow Sensor problems and it was the most common part to fail.
The TPI car will be faster, resale better all things equal.
There were also quite a few TBI Formula too. That didn't help the Formula rep as fast street car either.

I have an 88 IROC TBI. Before I bought it, I thought all IROCs had TPI 350's. I was pretty disappointed when I found out it had a 305 TBI. But a few thousand dollars, blood, sweat and tears and alot of learning about camaros have all put it where I am very pleased with it.

I looked at buying one of those once. It had the 15" aluminum rims on it with the L03. I don't know, iy just seemed wrong to have an IROC with a 305 TBI and 15" rims. But then agaian, I bought a RS, so go figure.
Be carefull, not all irocs had the good suspension package, it was an option just like everything else.

I can see your point. IROC to me meant the ultimate camaro and why get one if it really wasn't. But I saw a lot of potential in this car and I am very glad I bought it. I already had a 92RS.
If a person is familiar with the way an RS handles, they will be able to tell immediately whether or not the IROC has the good suspension package. I was lucky. That's one corner that the original owner did not cut when they bought the car. They DID at least get t tops, power windows, power hatch release, power door locks and cruise control. I guess she wanted the looks and the comfort and wasn't overly concerned with performance...since it had the LO3 and 2.73 rear. I'm kind of surprised that she got the performance suspension.

The base engine for 85-87 IROC's is the LG4 carb. The base engine for 88-89 IROCs is the L03 TBI. The base engine for the 90-92 IROC & Z28 is the LB9 TPI.
