PLEASE HELP!!! ARRGG
Ok..heres my story. I own a 91 RS with the TBI(of course). I went out and bought and edelbrock open air filter which of course didnt work with my car cause it wasnt for mine ( stupid me). I take it back, come home and call up my local shop. I ask them if they happen to stock any open filters for my car...they tell me no and that they have to special order one, plus i'd have to bring my car in to have it measured...i ask how much it costs and they tell me a K&N runs between 70-100 bucks. Am i missing something cause everyone says these things are like only 30 bucks..or is that for the newer models? Any help would really help casue i'm at a lose here. Thanks

Hey man,
the punks at "Discount Auto" or "Pep boys" don't know crap. They guess at many questions. P.A.W. has the open elements you can use. I don't have a pt. # for you, but the guys here do. Also, I run the "smaller" Edelbrock open element. It's Maybee 10 inches or so. it looks better IMO and there is no clearance problems at all. Screw K&N, any paper element is fine. For 80 bucks or whatever it is ,those things are a joke. Ok, the argument is "they flow better"...........that's great, but your TBI and Intake can't flow that much anyway so it really doesn't matter does it
NO. I spent a total of like 23 bucks and it made a huge diff.

If you really want the K&N setup, the part# is KNN601280...goes for around $70, but use the thirdgen discount and get 10% off.
I have an edelbrock style setup (minus paper filter) in my garage.....email me if you are interested

SUMMIT has 14" open filters with K&N type filters for 40 dollars with either the flat bottom or drop base style. Part numbers flat bottom SUM-239431 drop bottom SUM-239433. I purchased the flat bottom style and the filter looks like a K&N to me. They also have 2" to 6" tall units of the same styles. Don't forget you get a 10% thirdgen discount if used by Friday.

Thanks for the info guys. So my final question is this: An open air filter will work with my 305 TBI? Correct? Cause i'm so damned confused right now. I wont need to reconnect the sensors will i (once i remove the stock unit)? As you can see this is my first...mod...and i just wanna do it right. I feel stupid asking about something this minor but i'd rather be safe than sorry.
1991camaroRS,
If you look under the tech articles page there is a GREAT atricle on the "open air cleaner" install. Its the same article I used to put my air cleaner on. You will have to either relocate the IAT sensor(in the air cleaner) or jumper a 7.5Kohm resistor in the IAT plug. Also I think there is a Vacuum line you will have to plug. Pretty easy and straight forward, hopes this helps.

How about SMOG tests? Since the valve for routing hot air off of the exhast manifold is no longer being used (with an open element), doesn't this violate emissions? I did the swap, but am worried about passing the underhood emission inspection.

1991camarors,
don't feel stupid for askign any question. This is one big learning site and the more you know the less it will cost ya! So ask away no matter how dumb you think it is. You have a 305 TBI so you are golden here because you have already made the best decision yet
Oh and I bought my open air element from Summit which was like 17 bucks. You can get it even cheaper if you get the summit logo on it.

Thank you very much. Info has been very very helpul. I plan on going to the local Auto Zone down the street and picking up an open filter. They are acutally pretty cheap and are about the same as what Summit offers. HOPEFULLY, i'll have something to post on tomorrow cause i'm gonna try and do this tomorrow. I'm gonna go with the edelbrock 14", 3" hight with the 11/8 drop...i think is what it is. That will work right? Or do i have to remove the spacer? In any event, i'll post tomorrow if i am able to get the job done.
