Ok guys.
yes i'm still new here and this has probably been done, but this isn't something i could exactly search for so here's my idea.
I would love to tune chips for the TBI as i have some experience with tuning in my 99 GTP with a DHP Powertuner, although you guys don't have fuel trims to help tune with. But since i want a little more power now without tuning or getting involved with it juuuuuuust quite yet. I was going to go carbed for a little while.
Meaning this:
Disconnect the wiring that isn't necessary but leave it in the engine bay if possible just moved and strapped on the side. Since i am going to change the intake manifold with a carb intake anyways, i'll just pick up a carb as well, and i guess a distributor while i'm at it. I also thought of this since i'm probably going to change the fuel pump as well. so i'll run either an inline fuel pump and rig the pipe in the tank or get a TPI/190 walbro and use a regulator. Hooker 2055's. i know the motor will run and i know lots of old school guys that can tune a carb and are more willing to help with that then newer efi...so that's pretty much taken care of.
One thing i'm not certain of is the choice of carbs. I know the stock TB is rated at 300CFM? so would a 600 CFM be to much? I was thinking about using that. I know the heads on my 305 are restrictive but i think they should be ok for now. Basically i want to see what kind of power can be made before i switch it back to TBI and knowing what i'll need and the potential power it can make.
does that make any sense? i'll try to explain. because i don't need to tune a chip but a carb which would be easier for me right now. i can see the potential of power the motor can make with the carb then i'll have an idea of what i need to get to with my tuning. the reason i want to go back to the TBI eventually is the driveablitiy in different altitudes and all those corrections that make EFI better. also so i can lock the tune in. but i want the power now i guess. Here on the Big Island of Hawaii, we have all different altitudes. From sea level to 3000 FT elevation and thats on a cruise around the island. in town there is lots of hills...well all around the island actually. not only that but the weather here is so up and down as well...on my side of the island it's usually cold and rainy, but it can get really hot and humid...then there's the other side of the island that is very dry but also VERY VERY up and down hills.
Me personally I like my cars to run as close to top as they can all the time. Which is why i don't like carbs to much in my hot to cold, up and down location. i know when race day comes we can always dial it in there and what not, but yeah...i want my car to be as fast on the street as it is at the track...minus any use of slicks. which is why i like efi or at the very least the TBI, because it will always sort of compensate. At the very least more than a carb so that's why i want to eventually get back to the TBI.
Opinions????

The stock TBI unit is more like 450 CFM. I say you are not going to gain a thing with a 600 cfm carb. Your current 305 is lucky to pull 450 CFM @ 6,000 rpm. Dewey316 has even datalogged his beast of a 305 at nearly 6,000 rpm showing no signifigant pressure drop through the stock TBI unit. My 350 pulled some vacuum when it was stock, but not much. The 46mm/590cfm unit that is on my 350 currently is supporting alot of power.
Slapping a carb on your car as it sits is about the biggest waste of time, energy, and money that I can think of.

Fast no disrespect. You have the best knowledge i think of the TBI systems. I didn't want to get a 600CFM carb to make more power with just the carb. i didn't think the carb was going to make more power now. or even later. i just didn't want to tune a chip as of yet, and just go carbed for now. you can see my other thread i started when i first posted...it's a couple down with the title...i'm new here....i have what i want to do there...not that i think a carb will make more power than TBI with that...just don't have to tune a chip
i just wanted to switch to carb to run to see what kind of power i can make. tuning a carb for just power(of course idle and what not) i know it won't be as good as a TBI which is why i want to switch back LATER. for now though i wanted to play with the carb...easier for me to adjust with a carb when i change a cam, intakes, or whatever...once i'm happy with the power output i'll go back to the tbi. does that make any sense? hell i would love a 350 TBI eventually as well, but it would be easier being carbed now in which i could switch to a 350 easier without changing to much of my tune except adjusting the carb.
so i'm not trying to say that carbed will make more than TBI. i'm just looking to play with it for now...see what kind of power each combination can make...switch heads and test, change cam...test...and so on. once i'm happy with where it's at i'll go back to the TBI...thus because i left the harness there with everything it would be easy as well...and i'll know what i need more.

None taken man,
Just did not realize that you planned to switch heads, etc from your post. Sounded like you were going to do an intake, carb, and headers and leave it at that.
Have fun with your carb swap though. It will definately get you up and running quicker after a cam swap.

haven't decided if i want to change heads yet. if i did i think it would be SR torquers.
yeah i could get it up runnin easier with a carb after a cam swap. if i do the heads i'll try to get a slightly rad cam, but for now the most i think i'll go is a LT1 cam.
