Swirl port heads
As far as I know, and I could be wrong, they all come with the swirl port heads.

What kind of gain could be had by changing the stock swirl ports for stock nonswirl port heads? Or isn't it worth the trouble?

yes, putting on some 305 TPI heads should be worth the trouble. You can even clean them up a bit. little polishing and pocket porting.

Swirl baaaadddddd, Vortec gooooooddddd!
The swirl ports REALLY limit the engines hp potential. It blocks half of the port entrance to creat a swirl. It does this on every intake port so it's as if you blocked off half of the TB and ran some nice heads. After the crossfire idea flopped you would think GM would try and avoid the "swirl"!

Yeah, those ports don't seen like a smart idea. Especially if you mate those heads to a "regular" intake with normal ports in them. MAJOR MISMATCH and turbulence going on there where the air "hits" the blocked-port area. Not good.
I have heard that you can remove the heads and remove the "blocking" material around the intake ports to make the heads into non-swirl imitations and it helps a lot when matched with regular intake manifolds. Should be too hard or cost too much, gaskets and a few metal removal tool bits. Just match the ports to an Edelbrock 1204 gasket or something like that.
Anyone done this? Just curious. I have never seen these heads myself and don't know how much metal is "blocking". Can anyone clarify this? I mean, is it A LOT of material or just like 1/8 of an inch in one corner or something???

The "swirl" area is not really in the port, its in the bowl area.. there would be no kind of mismatch if you ran a different manifold with them. You can seriously grind down the swirl ramp where it obstructs flow but the whole shape of the roof in the bowl area is all wrong anyways it doesnt slope downward or anything
Ive seen some ok numbers from a heavily ported set. BUt i personally would not know how to go about reshaping the bowl area as it goes against all the shapes ive ever seen to port to
