Open Element??
I have a stock 305 TBI Firebird. I have an open element filter sitting around. Will it wirk with a stock hood? i thought a cowl hood, or something that would let air in was needed. I know it would help greatly, but will it do better than a stock intake without the aftermarket hood?

So, adding an O/E will increase my performanc..Yes. But will this require a better exhaust system? Or will it just add to a point and then stop because of the lack of flow for the exhaust. I am debating on headers, but I want the easiest and cheapest ones to install.
It'll give you a small boost, but nothing that would require updating the exhaust.

Well, the whole assymbly in general is too small to fit on my engine. So, I need to buy one. What do you guys recommend? I know K&N is good, but does that come with the filter and base for it?
Here's what I did:
went to Advanced Auto parts and bought a Mr.gasget 14" NON-drop base air cleaner with a paper 2in element (pn 1480) then I bought a 3" K&N filter (pn E-1650) to go in it.
It looks and flows great.
It set me back about $70.
Oh, I drilled out a hole in the bottom of the base for the IAT sensor.
To use a NON-drop base, you have to remove that little spacer thing on the throttle body.

I tried removing the IAT sensor tonight, but it is in the filter housing very tightly. I was not able to get it out. Are these sensors very expencive? Will buying one instead be worth it?
You could always replace it wit a resistor. The tech article reccomends a 7.5 I believe but a friend of mine only had an 8.2 laying around instead. It works great! The higher up in resistance you go the colder the ECM thinks the air is. I made a mistake at first and put in a 4.7. OUCH! Needless to say I replaced it with the 8.2
I want a K&N Filtered open element air cleaner. Wheres the best deal? Jegs? Summit? Local CarQuest? How much would it run me? What does NON-DROP mean? GAHHH just pick something for me :P

Future mods. Spark plug wires and plugs, tint, new 3inch pipes. Maybe putting 2 glass paks for effect. any other advise on getting to 300+ HP would be appreciated. Thanks

One Eye, non drop means the base of the open element air cleaner is not "dropped". You know how our stock air cleaners are sitting on top of a spacer ring and then it drops to the level that the filter itself fits on? Well, that's like a drop base. Basically, you can use drop base or non drop base on our cars. If you use a drop base you leave that spacer ring on. If you use a non drop base, take the spacer ring off. You may run into clearance issues with the coil, but that can easily be adjusted by bending the bracket. I'm guessing clearance would also depend on the manufacturer as well. As far as for which one to pick . . . you're on your own. You will get mixed decisions if you ask this board. Summit would probably be the cheapest place to order a specific one. Auto parts stores carries them as well and the filter can always be swapped with a real K&N.
