How much more power
if i added some ported late model(1989) 350 heads, a LT1 cam, and a edelbrock tbi intake to my 305 TBI
right now i got a open element and a high flow cat with flowmaster(a exhaust cut-out before all that) and the ultimate TBI mods
how much is the LT1 cam with all the stuff i would need to install it???

Brody, if you want to use the 350 heads you will have to mill them a lot. You would be better off IMO to use 305tpi heads or L98 aluminum heads off a Corvette. These heads have the correct 58cc combustion chambers to keep the compression ratio the same as stock.

Milling is no problem(unless they have to be milled too much) 64cc(??)to 58cc is that reasonable? Anyone know the cost of a new LT1 cam and/or L98 heads? I appreciate all of the information!!! What is a good intake for this combination? I was just wondering should I do all this engine work or just get 3.42 gears and a posi? Basically I am wondering the best bang for the buck? Thanks

bang for buck. vortec heads = 408 + 50 for gaskets + manifold @ 230 for vortec heads, + tuning tbi + 70 to mill the vortec heads.
i would get posi, but its not going to as much bang.
option two, get s/r torquers heads @ 599, regular manifold at $90, gaskets, tuning tbi.
rearend, 3:42 gears and install. $350-400?

Erik
Who all here is running a set up close to this, and how does it work? My father-inlaw and I are thinking about building one of these on the cheap!! We found a pretty clean 88 RS Lo3 5sp $2100, You Pull It rear 3.42s(open)$50, used LT1 cam free out of my 97 Z, used 305 TPI heads $125, FlowMaster 80 (Junkyard buy!!) $8, gasket set Felpro $80. Thats the main stuff and then all the little free things. Is this a good idea? What do you guys think? Oh, Snflupigus I am finding true bang for the buck is a used vortec motor out of a '96 to '98 GM truck platform. Around here they go for $1100-$1300 complete with 30,000 mi on them. If your going to spend $500 on vortec heads, might as well pony up $600 more for a 350 that you won't even have to pull the valve covers on!!!!(Remember Badbird?)

I am running a 350 tbi in a '87 truck. Here is a list of what I have done.
350 4 bolt main bored .040 over
domed pistons for 9.5:1 CR
Ported and polished heads with larger valves
268H Comp cams cam and top end
Flowtech headers
3.73s on a Detroit locker
Stock TBI
Stock intake
Exhaust is 3" custom Y pipe, 3" cat, 3" in/dual 2.5" out
Stock Computer
The 268H cam is recomended for modified computers, but I can't bring myself to buy a chip now and still have to buy a custom chip later. I had 3.42s with an open diff. up until about two months ago. With the 3.42s My 4500 lbs truck could beat a 2000 Mustwang GT by a full car length to 65 mph, with traction problems. The 2000 GTs are running mid 14s in the 1/4. I thought that this might be able to give you guys a clue as to some real world comparisons on a similar set up. I haven't had the pleasure of running a GT after the gear change.

4-bolt,
Im just curious, how steetable is that combination of yours? Does it make for a good daily driver? What kind of milage are you getting, and how does your stock computer react with that 268 cam?
Im wondering, because I am about to buy a chevy truck with the same engine platform as yours, and Im trying to come up with a good streetable daily driver combo that gets decent gas milage, but can still kick some A$$ on occasion.
Also, do you know of some chevy truck message boards that are as high quality as Thirdgen? I have found a couple, but they are really sucky and hard to navigate.

It is very streetable. The computer isn't very happy. I had to adjust the iac, and with this cam and a stock computer there just isn't enough timing advance. I started running with a 160 t-stat, but had to change to a 180, because with the 160 I couldn't run on premium fuel without stalling at idle in gear. I still don't run premium, but I knew that it was still a problem. It responds much better with 180.
The best truck site I have found is www.sportruck.com
The guys over there are very helpful and know there stuff. I am glad I found this site because there is a bunch of TBI info here.

Hey 4-bolt, it is good to see some of my TBI buddies from sportruck.com making it over here. This sight is very helpful, and I am constantly learning new tricks for our motors on here. Hey did you ever figure out the price of shipping?

Whassup? Nah, I have been extremely busy at work. Between work and swimming around Houston J/K I have been taxed for time, but I should be able to do that tomorrow.
Some of these guys make the TBI truckers look like we are still trying to figure out what the "wheel" is.
I was just reading about programming proms. Hmmmm? What else can I tear up?
