if i remove my AC pully on my 85 TA lb9 would i feel a performance increase??
im not even sure i can do this but i hear i can free up to as much as 10-15 hp doing this alone, is it possible to just take off the pully or would i need an idler pully for it? just curious....

89,
As long as the AC is turned off, all you really have there is an idler sheave.
Removing the belt will gain you approximatly 3/100ths of a horsepower...it's only a little worse than removing the AIR pump belt.

If it doesn't work I would remove it. It it does, leave it on.
My compressor leaks (found out after spending 200 convreting it to the R134), so I'll probably remove it as well.
I've already removed the smog pump and if I remove the AC, I really wont need that entire AC/Smog mounted on the front of the block except for the spring tension. Hmmm how to remove that and keep it serpentine.

hey its 94 today in omaha, wish i had ac controls. i got working ac but no controls right now. anyway. if you dont want the ac coming on sometime, just rig a switch to shut the compressor of manually. ive seen a 3 cylinder geo do this, it was like a nos button when he hit the switch, but in your case, its not robbing you of that much hp.
if you wont ever need it or want it again, sure take it off. but if you want it in 3 or even 4 years maybe. i would leave it. besides, its kinda hard to sell a car with out ac too.
just un plug the plugs on the compressor, and youll have removed what you need to.
removing 40lbs, is what. .03 seconds in the quarter.

none of the aftermarket serpentine belt systems use a spring tensioner. if you really want to delete it I think you just rig up an adjustable bar to the slternator or something so you can tighten the belt. I'd leave it though.

I removed mine cause it made so much more room in the engine bay, and it makes is sooo much easier to work on stuff. It was a breaze to put my headers in without it. I never use it anyways.

what about removeing the smog pump? i dont plan on doing this to my car but my friend does with his LG4, would it be worth it? we already removed the AC today, minimal increase in performance but alot cleaner under the hood.

Removing the whole smog setup (air pump, all hoses, etc) wont give you much of a performance gain...
But under the hood will look thousands of times better. The car will be MUCH easier to work on, too. Plugs become an hour job
Too bad we have E*Check in OH, so I cant get rid of it... but rumor is that its going away in 2k5.

Chuck, I go to OSU and nobody there had any e-checks. I live in NJ but that's besides the point. I thought Ohio was really lax about that stuff, just keep it registered and give them money. Besides, all Ohio's crap air gets blown over NJ anyways....what do you guys care .
