how reliable is TBI?

ive heard that TBI is more reliable than TPI.
i wrecked my formula 350 (god rest its sole) and im thinking of toning it down a bit on my next car. i figure if i get a 92 RS w/ a 305 TBI it will be too slow to waste money on trying to make it go fast. nd i can probably find one with under 60k for fairly cheap. if i dont beat on it (i won't... too slow) it should last well into the 100k mark right? i just need a nice car for transportation in the next few years before i finish school and have enough money for a brand new car and the build up of the 350 from my formula which would eventually go into the RS.

It should make it past the 200k mark flawlessly. I got 170k now. no probs here. suspension needs a major redo but the drivetrain and interior are solid.

I've got over 140,000 miles on mine. The only problems that I've had with it were ones that I've brought upon myself (modification related). If you're used to a the TPI 350 the TBI 305 may be a bit too tame for your tastes. Go test drive one and make sure that you can stomach the loss of performance.

Pretty darn reliable- if all regular maitnce has been preformed and it's had not too hard of a life.

GM used TBI in their pick up trucks for the reliability over TPI- cause some trucks work
for a living nad have to be reliable.

Too bad they didn't hop up the F-car TBI-
a cam, exhaust and some small work could've gotten 200hp. Oh well- typical GM I guess.

not a ton of miles on mine, but they have all been very fun. i got my car with 29k on the clock, it now reads 103k. i have never had any motor probs at all, i just broke the tranny a few months ago, and the rear just died a week ago. when you consider my repairs remember, i have more than 500 passes at the dragstrip with it and god knows how many auto cross runs.
i would say these are damn solid cars.

small amt of moving parts, simple design, easy to diagnose any problems = most reliable i can think of.

they are indeed dog slow... but they're quite reliable when they're in proper tune. My friend's 92 RS has close to 140k., mine only has 78k. I've had TBI trucks come in to work with 275+K.

mine has 157,000 miles and no major problems. valve stems need to be replaced and i could use a suspension rebuild. but other than that just 1 clutch. the air blows cold and it still runs strong. i dont baby it at all.

TBI vs TPI
2 large heavy duty injectors vs 8 small
low fuel pressure vs high fuel pressure
less material (lighter) vs heavy tuned tubes
very basic speed density efi vs mass air flow
TBI has been around longer and it's definatly cheaper than a TPI setup. You can pick up TBI parts from any junkyard nowadays. Only problem with TBI is the engine they installed under it. The valve seats are also a PITA because they usually need to be replaced after 140-150K miles.
