About Porting Heads??

How much would it probably cost to have my stcok heads ported and polished. And where would be somewhere that this could be done at. Also about how much HP gain would I be looking at with my 305?

BigRed,

Unless you are going to do the machining yourself, the cost would be prohibitive. You would be better off purchasing a set of 305 Torquer heads with the enlarged valves and proper springs. Paying someone else to rework your stock heads will be expensive and probably disappointing unless you spend a LOT of cash for someone who has some talent. Just enlarging the valvesm spring seats, and bowl porting the heads will likely take $400.00 out of your wallet. And you still have small port runner sizes with poor flow at the transition areas. To properly port stock heads, you'll likely have to machine through the castings, weld, and machine again. If you don't get good weld to the cast iron, you'll be pulling them again to repair them. Then balancing all the runner volumes and maintaining the correct shape through the runners and bowls can be time consuming. If you're going that far, you should match the chamber volumes and at least surface grind the heads to a flat plane. Ny this time, you will have spent twice the cost of aftermarket heads.

Of course, if you want something better than aftermarket heads, you pay the price and do the work.

just pocket port and polish them up yourself. Practice on some junk heads first.

I dunno. I've heard that do-it-yourself p&p's can really hurt the hp. I'm pretty sure you'd need to get everything just so. Wiuh a dremel and a six pack, your odds are pretty small for lucking out.
I recommend aftermarket or vortecs.

Well thanks for the help I was just going to ask, to see about the price difference between having my stock heads tweaked with a set of vortecs.

TBI 305 heads are swirl port heads and really can't be ported economically to improve airflow much due to the restrictive castings. Go w/ the Vortecs or Torquer's, you'll be glad you did.
