Adjusting timing on the LO3?'s

What is the best timing for LO3's? I have heard that 4* and 6* is good. Should you have to do anything else when u step up the timing? Also I heard u can set the knock sensor off if u turn it up to much. Ive been thinking 4* maybe the best but let me know!

3 degrees advanced works good on my engine, any more and I have to run 89 octane, but at 3 degrees I get better mileage and power than the stock 0 degrees.
