1st time at track (times within)
I made it to the track for the first time yesterday for the High School Days races. It was something I was anticipating for the past month. First of all, I had a lot of fun. It was sweet being able to fly down the track in my car. And even though it was my first time drag racing, I was still disappointed in my times. Oh, my Camaro is a mostly stock 1988 A4 TBI305 (the few mods are in sig)

The weather was pretty hot and humid for the first couple of races, but got a little better later on. I've heard from you guys that my TBI 305 should be able to run mid 16's, but I guess that's with a good driver and good weather. Or is there something wrong? Well anyway, thanks for your time guys.

it does sound like your car is a little down on power for some reason. a lot of factors could go into this, when was your last tune up/ oil change? how heavy is your car? did you have time to let the car cool off between runs?
a stock tbi should be able to run low 16's really.
the next time you go to the track try to let the car cool a little longer, lift the hood and turn the key to the run position so that the fan comes on. and try to get a fresh tune up into the car, you'd be surprised how much a little basic maintenence can help.
there is one thing it sounds liek you got perfect though, you had fun, and thats why we do this stuff. aprroaching 80mph and not having to watch for cops is pretty cool

hmmm...is your motor the same as teh RS? the LO3 motor? if so then your car should pop low 16's. My car when it just had a muffler. Was hitting 16.3

The best I've run so far is something like 17.2@78mph, I think I might need plug wires and a rotor. I'm also thinking my CAT might be holding me back, might be stopped up some.
I just found out that the track that I run at rises 72 feet from the finish line to the end of the runoff area, is everyone elses stips like this?

Keith 5- I live in VA too, where do you run at? Dinwhittey, Richmond, Maryland? I run at Dinwhittey and as far as I know there is no incline to the track, sure looks flat to me.
As far as the original post, be sure that your timing is set correctly. I never checked the timing the whole time I had the car untill after I started going to the track. It turns out that the previous owner had set the timing with out disconnecting the correct wire so the car was timed about 13 deg, retarted. My First track run was 17.4. Added a chip which increased timing and next run was 17.1. Then I did the exhaust, headers, high flow cat, and Flowmaster cat-back, and when I went to advance the timing a little I found the problem. Next track run was 15.9. Wow what a diference!! Stock RS w/ auto sould run 16.8-16.6. w/manual should run 16.1.

Hmm... your 60's are a tad high. How are you launching? I stall mine (before I had the posi) to about 1 grand and then just romped on it at go time. The nonposi would hook up fine like that and I'd cut a 2.30 60', sometimes high 2.9x. Lets see... I ran 16.40 @ at 80.40 with just the open element, and our elevation should be just about the same... so with some practice you'll be fine
It never hurts to tune up though!

Where I run my car, it is an 1/8 mile track. I basicaly have no mods to my LO3 (internal anyway) and i am running 1.97 60 footers and 9.41 @ 72MPH. The tires that I am running are BFG comp TA ZR. When they are heated silghtly they hold like mad. I am a non posi one wheel-peeler as they call it also. I am not sure how that equates into 1/4 times however.

Hey, don't feel bad, i didn't do much better. Granted, i drove 95 miles up to the track after work that night and never had time to let the engine cool. All 3 runs were made with the motor at 220-230 degrees, which probably hurt me, and the first 2 runs i had a somone else in the car. I also only got to make 3 runs, so i haven't perfected my technique yet.
Best 60' = 2.658
1/8 = 10.752
best 1/8 mph = 65.15
1/4 = 16.807
best 1/4 mph= 81.04
these were all on different runs, they were each the best of 3. I was still only getting out of 2nd with like 200 feet of track left, i'm thinking the upcoming 3.73 is gonna help a lot! I've heard this is good for almost a 1/2 second, is this true?

My best 60 foot is a 2.212 with a stock tranny and 2.73 rear-end. I don't have any major engine mods, but even before my mods listed in signature, I ran low 2.3 to high 2.2's no problem. I do a small burnout to warm up the tires, creap up to the line to where I just to hit the "stage" beam, stall it up to 1500-1600, and push the gas as hard as I can on the third amber. Nothing to it!

No, I haven't done a tuneup in a while, that could be one. Another thing, I've been over-heating lately, so my dad tried adjusting the timing to make it better, which worked, so I know the timing isn't the best it could be if my car runs cooler. About the launching, I only have an open-dif too, and bring RPMS up to about 2G I think. I'm pretty sure I didn't slip on the line, but could be wrong since all the andreneline dulled my senses
Other than that, I probably could have cooled my car a little better. I even ran an 18.1xx 1/4 once, when it was pretty warm. Don't know, just hope the next times better
