A friend of mine just bought a 92 Camaro RS 305 TBI and the air pump is making a ticking rattling noise, He was told that it means its going bad. Is this correct and what does one go for? Does he need it to pass emissions?

 

Yes it is going bad.
They sell around here for about $50, + core charge
Yes, you must have it to pass the visual inspection.

Hey 4-bolt,

Do you have testing in your area? Do they do a visual on your truck? I've heard that in my state (IL) that as long as you pass the sniffer, that's all that matters. Something to do with the OBD I system, or some **** like that. But the OBD II has to pass a visual as well. I know it's different in every state, but I was just wondering about The Lone Star State. I've heard that my area of the state might be having emission testing stations built within the next year. I hope not, but I just want to be prepared if needed.
