How much difference will a 3.23 posi make on my LO3?

I just got one yesterday off an 86 IROC. I wanted to get a 3.42 but settled for 3.23, anyway will it make a big difference or small difference in my acceleration? I've heard from so many people that gears are one of the best mods you can do, so if anyone else has done this or knows about it I'd appreciate hearing how it turned out.
Thanks,
Brad

it will pick you up a couple of tenths at the track. the big thing you will gain is a bit more traction with the posi.

If you have a manual with it's 3.08 gears, it'll make a noticable difference. If you have an automatic with it's 2.73 gears, it'll be a huge difference.

Thanks for the input, I guess i'm going to have to wait a while to see the results since it is raining here Will posi hurt my handling any? Several people have said they thought it might. Also anyone got any tips on how to make the install any easier? Thanks,
Brad

It won't hurt your handling, it'll help actually. What you need to watch out for though is that when it does break loose, it breaks completely loose. If you've ever hit a corner hard and nailed the gas, you just spun one tire and maybe fishtailed a little bit. With posi if you do the same thing, it'll take a bit more power to break it loose, but when it does that rear end will whip right around.

The rear end will help alot! I cut my 1/4 mile time by like .5 or so. Also it helps with handling. And if you drift like I do. LSD also helps with drifting.

Rallyssport,

I was leaning toward 3.73's, but after I asked for a ton of opinions, and went through the archives 3.42's were the winner, with my 700R4. I've got all of the parts, now I just have to anti-up the money to get them installed. I know it will be a difference of night and day over my current, stock 2.73's. 3.73's aren't bad for an auto, but in general 3.42's were pretty near perfect.

I miss seeing the sun shine down on the black #3 car.

I'm old enough to know better, but still too young to care!--Wade Hayes

Chevy High Performance's Sept. issue just came in the mail and they have been building a 87 camaro with a carb and 700-R4 (2.73). They installed a 3.73 rear out of a V6 Blazer and got a 0.49 second improvement. I'm not sure the e.t difference between 3.73 and 3.43, but they said it upped 70 mph cruising to 2650 RPM.

Edelbrock TES Headers, REALLY high flow cat, 2 1/2 in catback flowmaster, 160 stat, hypertech chip, MSD ignition (rotor, cap, superconduct. wires), Bosch quad4 plugs, open air filter, all TBI mods, no smog stuff, no EGR, lots of suspention and alignment upgrades, and a big Chevy bowtie sticker on the back.

Fastest e.t.:
15.64 @ 87.8mph

That 70mph cruising with 3.73 gears should be 2450rpm on the dot with 26" tires, a .69 overdrive, and lockup converter LOCKED!
My car with 3.08 gears is running 2000 at 74mph when converter is locked. It's running 10mph less when converter isn't locked. I did the math and 3.73 will put me at 2500 at 74mph. Check out the online calculations in the tech article area of this site. I think it might be under FAQ or something like that. I think the 3.73 are a perfect compromise. With any tranny, 3.73 really show off and don't hold the engine too high while cruising.
I'll let everybody know how my posi/gears/LCA relocation brakcets turn out. I also have new tires coming for the East Coast f-body nationals.

700R4's have a huge first gear, 3.06, and with 3.73's in the rear you'll be in first gear for about half a second before you have to shift. Plus if you drag race, you'll run out of gear before you hit the end of the track and have to shift into overdrive.
