Bouncing tach at Idle...

I just noticed this this morning, if the car isn't heated up, the tach bounces between 800 and 1000 rpm, like it's having trouble idleing.. Any ideas on what this could be?

I'm gonna go for a spin and see if heating it up a little helps it out...

if your IAC motor is worn a bit and starting to go or if the O2 sensor is toasted, it can cause mis reads in the ecm that will make this happens.
get a can of gumout tb cleaner spray and use it liberally on the tb, throught eh blades and down the IAC port, while revving to engine. if it is the IAC being clogged this will likely solve the problem.
the way to tell if it is the O2 sensor is to get out on the highway and drive for a bit, if it is getting bad reads the ECM will pitch a code after you have driven a few miles at constant speed or as soon as you lift after going a constant speed. teh car will also feel a little "loaded up" like it is getting to much gas sometimes if the O2 sensor is bad or going.

hope this helps

I replaced the O2 sensor about 3 months ago, I doubt that is it.. I'll try spraying the TB off first.. Thanks

Does the car windmill when you start up cold? How about when it's warm? The flex in idle can also be a misfire from bad spark plugs. Pull off the distrib cap and make sure everything is clean (white powder is normal). Also check most of your spark plugs, what kind of plugs are you using? What is your base timing set at? Lots of questions will help us figure out your problem. Is this when you're in gear or park? Does the car almost stall out when you put it into gear? WE NEED MORE DETAILS. It could also be your alternator but I think you would have noticed any bouncing around of the voltage needle (13-14 back and forth) but that is usually not dependant on cold start.
Definatly clean out the IAC with the cleaner. The IAC will actually go to 160 while in park and then back itself down till your max warm (or cold) idle rpm speed is (eprom dependant).
