I'm pretty sure trucks didn't get TBI untill 87 or 88, a friend has an 86 truck with a 350 in it, and it has a carb on it.

My brother in law had a 87 short box 4x4 that had a 305 TBI. I believe this is the only year of the "old" body style to have TBI. Even then not all trucks had it. Unless he likes the look of the older body style, the 88-98 4x4 trucks are miles ahead in the comfort department vs 73-87 4X4s. I think 4X2s ride about the same.

I was wondering about the TBI because my friend had that generation Suburban. Those lasted till '91 and he had TBI. The old generation have solid axle and are 3x cheaper to lift. That is another consideration

'88 was the first year of a new generation. I was wondering about the '73-'87 trucks.

I think the '87s got tbi.

My dad has an 88(88-96 generation) with a 350 tbi, some his generation trucks got carbs.

From all the documentation I've seen, trucks, vans, and suburban/blazers all had EFI(throttle body) beginning in 1987. These used the 1227747 ECM. Prior to 1987, all of the trucks were carbureted.

Some of the 88's still got the carb.

I'm looking on www.partsamerica.com right now and in 87 you could get a 305 or 350 with FI.

I'm going through the years now, in 86 you could get a 305 with FI in a 2 wheel drive version but no other engine got FI, 86 4wheel drives got all carbs.

85 had no FI.

87 was the only year model of the 73-87's that had the TBI motor. The motor in the 87's is almost identical to the 88-92 truck motors. The suburbans that where made up to 91 also have the TBI motor.

Then why does www.partsamerica.com list a fuel injected 305 for model year '86?

Well if they make one then I have never seen one and a bunch of other people I know from the internet have never seen one. I will ask around a little more, but nobody I know of has ever seen one, so maybe the partsamerica was a miss print. Or either I am just a dumba$$.

My dad owned an 87 burb, 350 TBI. Now he has a 95 with TBI w/o vortec .
What are you talking about live rear axle. Don't all trucks have live rear axle with leaf springs? I thought only the front changed enough to account for the difference in lift kits. As for having EFI in 86, I doubt it. I'm pretty sure TBI came out in 87. Too many changes in 86-88 with GM. They went from carb to all EFI, they changed the small block and all blocks were roller cam ready.

i am very educated on the answer to this question because i have restored 5 of these styles of trucks as you see in some of the posts, 87 was the first tbi engine. 86 was carbed. my 87 and a 747ecm and my 91 crew cab which is the same body style, because it was one ton 4x4 has a pcm.
