how to get more HP on a TBI engine

I just purchasing a 90 Camaro RS and it's bone dry stock. I was wondering if there was anything i could do to it to make it a faster car. This is my first time owning a TBI so i don't know much about it. I'm a high school student and this is my first car. I don't know much about camaros, and this is my first time using this site. I was wondering if i could get some help, thanks.

things to do:
#1 open element or other high flow air cleaner. The stock one only has a 1"x2" opening.
#2 redo exaust.
#3 get gears....

There is plenty you can do to make that car faster. I'd definetaly start by freeing up the exhaust. I felt a noticeable improvment by adding Edelbrock TES headers and a Flowmaster American Thunder cat-back. The car not only pulls harder, but sounds better too.

After the engine can exhale better, you might wanna let it breath in better. I'd start doing this with a new intake, and maybe new heads and cam if you can afford. If you go that far though, you'll change the way the engine operates and a custom computer chip will be needed, along with higher flowing fuel injectors. As far as recommendations for the above components. . . to maintain your street legality you're going to need to maintain your EGR system, which rules out the Vortec heads, the L98 Vette heads, and most intakes other than the Edelbrock TBI intake, whose EGR flange is the correct one for our application. The Vortec heads, and L98 Vette heads could be made to work with some custom work on the headers. You'd have to have some body cut a hole and weld a fitting on the header, then run a line from that fitting to the EGR valve somehow, just as the Vettes do. This would require some custom work and could become a pain.

However, World Products makes a cylinder head called the S/R Torquer 305. This kit retains the EGR without modification, it's valves are small enough the fit inside the 305s smaller bore, it's combustion chambers are small enough so you won't lose compression, and they're fairly cheap.

As far as intakes go, the Edelbrock TBI manifold is not the best, but as I said, it will allow you to retain the stock EGR without modification.

As far as cams go, there are plenty out there, plenty that have "street legal" status, and others that don't, but will pass an emissions test anyways. I'd start looking at Crane Cams and their Compucam line, and maybe Comp Cams.

Superchargers for our cars are also available for around $3200, and nitrous (some street legal kits) are available for $500-600. These come as complete kits and come with jets so you can vary the power boost from 50-150 hp.

Just some thoughts to get you started, any questions, just ask.

the smartest thing you could do was come to this board.. these guys have helped me with many things... my 91 rs is still stock but in the "process" .. i didnt buy headers and exhaust first because i dont want something sounding fast but still being slow no flame intended.. so my first thing i am going to do is my gears and posi i paid 130 for gears and posi all together... slp takeoff unit and used gears the lt1 guys in phoenix always ask me before they sell their parts!!!!
after gears i am putting in a cam and intake at the same time.. and after that i plan on putting in headers and a flowmaster 3"cat back... then i will swap from auto to 6 speed i love stick so much more.. and i will either go 350 or supercharge the big red machine after that! i want to be on the top of the tbi speed by the end of 02!!

good luck with your new car and welcome to the board...
Shawn

if i was speakign jiberish in anyway i am turning 21 tomorrow and started celebrating early!!!so sorry...

Yeah, there's a lot of things you can do to a TBI motor.Mine has a Crane Compucam,Ported Throttle Body and Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator from Turbo City,Edelbrock TBI Intake Manifold,SLP Headers, 3" Cat, Flowmaster 3" Cat-Back Exhaust,And a Custom Chip from Ed Wright. All of this with new Crate Motor (350) with 9.5 to 1 Compression.
Runs Great.Researched everything on this Site, before I spent any money.

I made a site to help people starting out on 305 TBI engines. A lot of people like the site that were just learning. Has lots of mods that I have done, with pictures, install instructions, if it was worth it or not and part numbers. Wouldn't hurt to look.

TES headers
Catco 3" Cat
3" Hooker Aerochamber Catback
8mm MSD Heli-Core plug wires
AC delete pulley (removed all AC in front of heater box)
(check brakes, i just went in today a had to replace cracked brake shoes, and crack rubber brake lines, along with replacing pads and resurfacing rotors)

next small mods during college:
MSD cap, coil, and rotor
Free TBI mods
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator and Gauge

next summer:

This is only my opinion but the best ways to get more horsepower if you don't have alot of money... 1st...new computer chip 2nd....under drive pulleys 3rd...3" exhaust 4th ...headers these are only a few but are affordable upgrades that will give you alot better performance for your dollar.

I don't have a tbi I one a tpi and am just doing some research but I have had 2 cars with underdrive pullys and I have been disapointed with both sets of pullys. I have not gotten any noticable power and lost efectiveness on my ac and lost much voltage in my electrical system I would never sugest someone buy pullys I don't like spending my hard earned money on things that don't work and cause problems. I have alot of friends that have had pullys and felt like they wasted their money.

My theroy is that if you can't notice a impovement than it isn't worth it

just my $0.02

Horsepower for dollars I recommend a high flo air filter like everyone else has said and look into some new exhaust I have Edelbrock TES headers and cat back system but I've heard SLP is hands down the best.

SLP is also hands-down the most expensive. You could have a brain surgeon hand-make a set of gold headers for cheaper.
Well, maybe it's not that bad, but we're still talking close to $400 for mass-produced, bent stainless-steel.
Chips are about $150 bucks, but you're not going to get too many fans of the major manufacturer's chips on this board.
