timing and stock 305 TBI on 88 camaro

Ok, just replaced EGR solenoid and the engine is knocking now... how do you adjust the timing on it, the nice sticker on the hood has been painted over by previous owner....its an 88 camaro, 305 TBI, no mods (yet)....help!

PS. I really just need to know what that darn sticker says...if you have that info i'd GREATLY appriciate it! Thanks!!

Ok...is there a marking on a flywheel so I know when it is @ btdc? and I just turn the dist to 0 degrees? how do I tell when its at 0 degrees? sorry about the possible stupid questions...I have a Haynes manual and it just says to follow the VECI label (which has been painted over)...thanks for the help!

Yeah, make sure to disconnect the EST (electronic spark timing, or something), which is the tan on brown wire that 89 Formula mentioned. After doing that, you check the timing using a timing light. If you need more instruction on that, I'd suggest buying a book. The little notch on the, ummmm, spinny thing attached to the crank (damn vocabulary has left me, maybe I need to buy a book) is the indication of where the spark is occuring. Line that up with the timing tab 0* mark, above the timing cover, by rotating the distributor.
Edit: Just to simplify, you can tell when the engine is at TDC on the #1 cyl by the aforementioned mark lining up with 0*.

NT,

The round thing is the harmonic balancer.

If I'm not mistaken I believe our TBI's can be advanced as much as 6* before theres any detonation. I could be wrong... experimentation is the only way to find out.

Well it sounds more like the knocking could possibly be coming from the crankshaft...possibly a connecting rod....it sounds loke your rapping on it with a wrench...tap tap tap... and only above 1500 RMP...oh well...fun fun...well that will be a nice project.

Just an FYI, no flames intended.

Harmonic vibration damper (or harmonic damper) is the correct term. Some also act as an external balancer, such as the 400 SBC, but they are really a damper.

AJ,

No flame taken. Just always called it a balancer. I think the names are recognized either way.

Thanks,
Phil
