1/2" spacer hood clearance

I was just wondering how everyone is putting on the 1/2" tb spacer with a 14x3 air cleaner? I have a 14x3 drop base air cleaner and the wing nut already puts a very slight imprint in the hood insulation. If I put a 1/2" spacer under my tb I think my hood will be pressing on the air cleaner even more when I close it. Does everybody just squeeze the hood shut?

I have a 9 x 3 flat base air cleaner. Did you take off the spacer ring on the TBI? That thing is about 3/4" thick. I don't know if your drop base unit will clear the throttle linkage with the spacer removed but I would try that first. I have no clearance problems w/ the 9 x 3.

Yes, I have the tbi spacer ring still on, if I take it off my drop base air cleaner will hit the throttle linkage. The hood shuts fine now but if I install the 1/2" tb spacer, I think the hood will be hard to close. I guess I'll just wait until I get my Cowl induction hood so I won't have to worry about clearance

I didn't know Summit sold a Flat air cleaner base. It's not in their catalog. I just ordered it part # SUM-G3000B for $17.74 shipped. I couldn't find a Flat base in any of the auto parts stores here. Thanks taz.

Just walk into autozone and pick up a flat base air cleaner. they all have them. and usually a couple of different sizes and styles. $12-$15. Getting rid of the ring lets the tbi breath better.

Thanks, I ordered the Summit Flat base a couple of days ago and I received it just now. Time to get rid of that spacer ring.

Well, I just tried to put on the flat base cleaner but, the tbi stud was about 3/4" to short and when I shut the hood it shut but, the wing nut put a big impression in the hood insulation and actually stuck to it.( I just laid everything in place since I couldn't bolt it down). If I inverted the air cleaner lid then I could bolt everything down but that looks stupid. The only way I could make it work is to get a 2" air filter but that doesn't look good either. I don't want to get a longer tbi stud to make it work right now because I don't like the idea of having to smash my hood down. I noticed that 92blackbird and TAS have Firebirds with the flat base, maybe your hoods have a little more clearance than my camaro. I'm just going to save the flat base until I get my Cowl induction hood then I'll be able to put on the tb injector spacer and flat base with the longer tb stud.

I just left the lid upside down.
Some people have gotten longer TBI studs off of trucks, and had the lid the right way around. I think that would leave indents in the hood, as the lid is convex (upwards).
I dunno, not too many people see underneath my hood, and even if they do, they're wondering why my front facsia is attached to nothing.

Um studs are cheap, go get one. When I put on my open element my stock stud was too short so I had the lid up side down till I put in the longer stud. Needing a stud depends on the brand of open element. My friend got a different one and he could use the stock stud. You can also unscrew the stock one a a bit to get some more length from it. His lid was very flat while mine is kind of coned. I doubt the firebird hoods have more room under them. The bulge is offset and is not where the air cleaner is.

Back to the subject, I dunno how anyone could put in a .5" spacer with a 14x3 air cleaner.

Um, Studs are cheap but, replacing a distorted Hood is not.
