open element guys
ok, on the snorkel to the stock crap, the thermac device thingy that has a hose onto the exhaust manifold, when you took that junk off, did you close the hole? do you need to? what did you close it with is so?
also i was looking in my hanes manual thingy, and it explains the thermac thingy to let the hot air in so you get better cold engine performance, is that so? does it run irregularly with this detached??
thanks in advance

the heat riser just transefers heat not exaust. There is nothing but heat coming out the hole. with open element you just need to cap the line on the front of the TBI and move the sensor on the housing to a cool place.

if you are talking about the sleeve that goes around the manifold...just cut it up and rip it off. its worthless and looks like a$$ after you get an open air cleaner.

I bought a k&n air filter for my stock air cleaner, will that filter fit well under a 14x3 open air element. Also, what to do about the small black metal hose on the passenger side that hooks up to the stock air cleaner.

On a lighter note, anybody wanna buy a K&N?

Am I correct that leaving the breather (small black hose with filter coming from the passenger's side valve cover, in my previous juvenile remark) is harmless as well as removing it completely and/or getting an aftermarket filter to plug it? Also, in regards to the coil wires-is that the wires in the TBI or under it or what exactly. Sorry for the lack of knowledge questions-just don't want to screw up the ride. Thanx.

It goes from a little black box-shaped thing BEHIND the tb, to the middle of the cap on your distributor. It has nothing to do with the induction system, and everything to do with the ignition system.

Watch out for rubbing the coil wire! It appearantly was and I didn't know it until *ZAP* about 2 weeks ago it finally wore through the insulation.... left a small black mark on the air cleaner where it burned the chrome off... black marks around where it grounded through the TBI... and some wire blew into 2 pieces and killed the car, had to be towed. Couldn't tell that the wire fried until we got under the car on a lift. For the time being, i notched the metal around the coil so it won't come in contact at all, just with the rubber on the filter, and i'm putting a 10 or 12" OE on this weekend cause It'll be one less thing to worry about happening again.

OR, you could replace the coil with something a little more exotic.
I bought an accel coil, which is meant to be mounted on the firewall. Because of the positioning, I don't worry about it rubbing on the open element. It also looks a little cleaner, what with the coil in plain view, and the 8.8 coil wire.

All I did was loosen up the two bolts that hold the coil bracket assembly and pivot the left side of the bracket back towards the firewall.( the left side of the bracket as you're standing in front of the car). Then just tighten everything down. Now there should be about 1/16"-1/8" clearance between the wire connector and air cleaner base.

the install of the open element is simple , a two minute job i haven't had a problems with the coil hitting it, it has a 9/16 drop on it and clears the coil and the hood... i think it complements the Stb and makes the engine compartment look better.....

If your coil is in the way just take off the bracket and let it wander about the top of the intake (coils are nomadic by nature and they work better when not in captivity) this is what I did.

nomads?? um, ok.
guys, just BEND the bracket!!! it will drop the coil back AND away from your aircleaner.
at worst it will burn you car to the ground.
in my case it just fried every fusable link i could find, so. read the RED on the tech article and bend it.
read the article. if you have a ? after reading it twice email me.
this kindof clutters the boards a bit.
