Yeah, my webpage has been down for a while ever since crosswinds had a server crash and format all their raid hard drives! Ba5tards. Oh well, hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to upload it.

Eric, visit the webpage, this is a true windows scanning software that even graphs out BLM at certain rpm and MAP readings!!! This is SUCH a help when tuning an eprom and/or adjusting fuel pressure.
DOWNLOAD THIS AND BUILD IT. IT'S EASY, CHEAP, AND WORTH THE TIME!!!

soo this is like a piece of plug in scanning equipment or is it to burn chips? If it is a scaner, what is the minum requirememnt of a laptop to run it? Could a apple run it? My sis retired her old Apple laptop, 100MHZ I think. Could I run that Apple program that lets you have windows 95/98 too to do it? If I did would it even have the right output cable? probably not I bet .

Try it. Heck, the software is FREE. Oh yeah, and I do believe the serial out on old apples is exactly the same as the ibm. It's a serial port! Not an "apple serial port."
Just like printers, the parallel port (LPT1) is the SAME thing on the apples, haven't you ever seen the apple/ibm printers back in the day (few years ago ).
This software is free and anybody can make the cable, it takes a few minutes with a few parts (2 resistors, 1 transistor 2N2222A, serial adaptor for a clean job). The pinouts are even listed so there is no research needed. I don't understand why people WOULDN'T do this. Heck, if anybody is interested I can make a bunch of the cables and sell the for like $20 shipped. Let me know through e-mail if you want one.

Damn! This would make tuneing like 40x easier! No more stripping wires on your O2 sensor and running a voltmeter, just plug this in! Man, nice!

And you can even save the data and everything, this is really cool!

Heh, first I gotta figure out what all these things are though

OK.. What all would I need to do to get a read out of this stuff...

Labtop or really long Cable
Freeware
cable that would plug into the computer and the ECU/M??
And then learn how to read and reprogram

Is that was this stuff is for.. So you can burn customer chips??

Or just gather data and then adjust as needed

thanks,,

Would this work on a 88' TBI Firebird or is the ECM different? On the web page it said 89 and up.

It's 89+ TBI, sorry, 88 sucks. BTW, if you have a stock eprom in there now you can just swap in a 8746 with no problem. All the pinouts are the same, at least that's what I've been told. For about $20 for an ecm from a junkyard or even thirdgen resource! You would need the eprom from them as well.
I don't understand why everybody thinks this is for chip burners only. This is software that tells you what your computer is doing! If it isn't working right then you'll be able to pin point the problem without multiple trips to the parts store! It tells you trouble codes, if your lean rich and all that good stuff. Basically, if you have ANY mods done to the car you should think about tuning the fuel pressure! That's a free modification not including the gaskets. It isn't hard and it'll help out a lot.
Basically you look at the BLM (block learn multiplier) and see if it's below or above 128. If it's below 128 then you've given it too much fuel pressure. If it's above then it needs more fuel pressure. Now wasn't that easy

Awesome. Before I mess with the Mac laptop I wana see if the cable will go to it. What type of cable does it need?

As for IBM/Mac printers, Macs had different cables than IBM. It looked like an IBM connection on a mouse or keyboard, PS/2 I think they call it. My first real computer back in '92 was a Mac.

I just finished making the cable. Here are a few pictures to show you how simple it is. One wires goes to ground, the other goes to the data line.

This is killing me... I'm ready to break out the soldering iron... Not good with it, though.. Not good at all.

Anyone have a Part Number List so we can shop for the pieces at Radio Shack??? That would be helpful. Your cables look so "clean", too. I gotta have one... By Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wasn't there a 12V+ wire requirement???? In an earlier schematic? Am I losing my mind?

EDIT: Oops, power must come from the laptop at pin 4/9???? Just curious, what is the voltage at that pin as outputted from the laptop?

fast_broker,

Yes, pin 4 is DTR and that is 12 Volt when the port is active.

You got it!
When I measured on my laptop DTR was -8 Volts and when I started the program DTR changed to +12V. It is nothing special with my program, any program that access the serial port will do the same. It is possible to turn it off from the program, but then you must write code to do it.

The battery on my laptop is about to sheet the bed. Only works about 25-30 minutes, now... Pisser. That should be long enough to yield some data.

Looks like it works??? RPM data and other data was wrong and several of the BLM data seemed off, too. But could be my connection/laptop/version. BLM cells seemed to fill in fine.

Can someone explain the 4 BLM/INT data view methods in detail? ie, with words and/or formulas so that I can explicitly know the differences between them???

I just found out that you need to have internet explorer installed on the windows machine if you want winaldl to run. Go figure!
Just finished installing IE and now the program works. I'll test out the cable tomorrow evening because right now there are a bunch of people outside that are more heavily intoxicated than me. Time to party even though OSU lost to Penn! Good for Joe P. he deserved the win and I felt good about this loss (cause my team ain't doing so hot).

Sorry to bardge in! I made the cable and have the software all setup and get no readings. I double checked the cable and it is made right according to the diagram. The software opens up just fine as well. Any idea what I am doing wrong?!? I am great with the mechanical stuff, but sometimes a little slow with this computer stuff.

THANKS! Jerry
