a/c Compressor leak

i have a 92 camaro with a 305, & i have a leak in my ac which has 134a in it. it cools very well, but last year it started leaking out slowly & i couldnt find the leak. i checked all the lines, & condensor, many times & nothing. recently i saw that there was an oil puddle at the back & bottom of my compressor (which is the original one), but it's not coming from the o-rings, it leaks out two cans of freon every 45 days. so when i saw the oil at the back of my compressor, i recharged it with freon & a seperate can of red dye. 45 days later i have low freon again, & oil at the back of my compressor, but no red dye?

where did the red dye go?

no other leaks anywhere.

can anyone explain this, why there was oil again & no red dye, and no freon left.

it does not leak from anywhere else, & it cools great for about 45 days.

i'd like to keep my original compressor, has anyone ever replaced the seals inside of our compressors? shaft seal, etc.

after it leaked out the last time, it was then winter & no oil puddle was present all winter at the back of my compressor.

so has anyone ever had this problem?

Re: a/c Compressor leak

A couple things come to mind. PAG compressor oil is water soluble. If the oil leaked out a few seasons ago it's possible that water somehow washed it away. It's possible to have a leak with no evidence of dye if you have a leak high up in the A/C system, like the top of the compressor.

I'd try recharging the system and looking for pin-hole leaks with soapy water and a swab of some kind. I like the small foam paint brushes myself. Check for leaks with the engine off, and then check with the A/C running. Did you use the ultra violet luminescing dye?

My current compressor had a leak that only occured when it was running. The compressor case o-rings were bad and would only leak when the high side pressure was ~200 psi.

Another possibilty is your evaporator is leaking. I can't picture the F-Body A/C plenum, but maybe you can take the blower motor out and look at the evap. If it's got oily debris stuck to it (or your red dye) it's leaking.
