damn ping!
Hey guys. Just a quick question. Once my car warms up to 220 or so. cruising around town, I will get nasty ping when leaving a light or stop sign. Unless I slip the clutch a good amount I get ping. I dont have a timing light at the moment But the car runs fine other wise. Just when warm and taking off I will get ping. It is a little better when running supreme. I was just curious on what timing you L03 guys are running, Only mods I have right now are K&N and flows. I was also noticing a miss at idle (runs perfect off idle) I have some plain ol ac delco plugs and 7.5 Borg warner wires(8k miles or so). Maybe a fresh tuneup will help the ping?.Any info would be highly appreciated as I hear alot of horror stories about detonation. I am hoping to get data logging soon. (just need to find a damn laptop) Thanks guys!
Only about 50k miles on the motor btw.

well i dont have a timing gun either and my timing is set perfect to me at least, what you could do to bring the temp down is run your own switch to the fans and tun them on when it hits 200 insted of 220, right now my car runs roughly 185F.

It maybe carbon build up, you could try seafoaming it.
Re: damn ping!
Years ago my wifes '92 with only 70000 miles on it would ping like crazy in the summer. It had a fresh tune up/93 octane gas and a cool fan switch, it would still ping.
I never did figure out the cause (traded it in).
On a side note, my 4 banger Ranger was doing the same exact thing earlier this summer. It had a fresh tune and would ping very loud, it was acually emabaressing. I figured out the egr valve was stuck open and whatever actuates it was malfunctioning. I replaced both and it runs like it's brand new.

Re: damn ping!
I will try seafoaming it asap. Should I change my plugs right after seafoaming it? And yes the ping is DAMN embarrassing lol. And also does anyone have a diagram explaining how to wire a manual switch so I can just flip the fan on in town?

Re: damn ping!
thanks Raiderfan. I just went out there and cleaned the TB took it for a drive around the block to see if it pings BEFORE 220. Yep. Under a load from a take off it will ping away. Sounds like a diesel. Anyways gonna try seafoam if that doesnt help ill check the EGR. Kinda low on funds at the moment. Thanks guys.

Re: damn ping!
Wouldnt hurt to get a timing light and double check the base timing. The engine could also be running lean from a bad fuel pump or some other issue.

Re: damn ping!
ya gonna go to a buddys house and snag his light. Mine broke while moving. I tossed some seafoam in it tonight. about half the can through the brake booster slowly then just let it stall. I guess ill fire it and drive it first thing in the morning. I have a full tank of fuel right now should I toss the rest of the seafoam into the gas tank?
