Drop or non drop base open air element
Hello,
I have a big problem...
I bought several months ago a L69 dual snorkel air cleaner...
But after reading lots of posts, and especially this one https://www.thirdgen.org/ultimatetbi , I hesitate. It would be a good thing to put an open air element instead of the dual snorkel, no?
Ok in the case of putting an open air element, what shall I do?
There are 2 schools... Drop base or non drop base...
Important thing, I have the stock hood.
I 'd like to put the KN Xstream aircleaner lid along with K&N filter.
So if I put a drop base aircleaner element I must leave the gold ring so as to not interfere with the TBI components. Right? It's more restrictive but there's no electrical problem. What the maximum size of the air filter I can put? 14x3?
Ok the second idea, I can remove the gold ring if I put a non drop aircleaner. But what is the maximum height of the air filter? 14x3, 14x2, 14x2,5? And removing the gold ring won't make any electrical problem?
I've read there's only one problem with the second choice. The nuts that retain the open air element is too short. Right?
Who can give me links to summitracing to show me what I have to order?

I would keep the L69 dual snorkel air cleaner. I would get the 3" tall lid from a TBI pickup truck, use the truck air filter, the L69 dual snorkel base, plumb up the air ducts. I would also look into cutting the bottem out (will it fit in a F-car???) of the L69 dual snorkel and squeeze in a hypertech powercharger or soup bowl equivalant.
Discontu on FSC made his own out of a $3.00 stainless bowl from walmart. $3.00 plus 1 hr of time vs. $50+. Seems logical to me.

If it comes down to the taller lid vs. the bowl, I would go with the bowl. The stock intake choker ring is terrible.

Thanks for the plug Fast.
I totally agree, the L69 dual snorkel would be your best bet.
As for your hood clearance issue, get a package of modelling clay and roll a small amount into a cylinder and stand it up straight on top of your air cleaner with the nut tightened. Then close your hood and open it up again. Now measure the length of your clay, that will be the amount of hood clearance you have to work with.
For example: If you run a 2.5" air cleaner and you have 0.75" of hood clearance when you measure it with clay, you could step up to a 3" air cleaner and still have a 0.25" of hood clearance to spare.

wahoo, since you have lo3 I would not even consider the L69 dual snorkle, because like fast355 said it will thake a hell lots of modification to make it worth it and no there is no place for the bowl. Air and air condition acessories will bee in the way of the right snorkle too.
Loock at the "kickass cold air intake scoop" tread for a affective air intake that fits perfectly in your engine bay with all accessories. You will get twice as much air as the L69 ducts allow.
If you go with a open element take or make a flat base and use a 3" high filter so you will have the exact same hight as the stock setup.
From the top of the tb you need to ad only 4 milimeters to clear the trottle linkage.

Re: Drop or non drop base open air element
Thanks for the replies...
One more detail, I want to remove my air pump
Sorry but I don't understand the interest of the bowl. Can you explain me a little more. I'm not a mechanic expert, and my english is not so good to understand all...
Fast355, I know after reading lots of posts you are an excellent mechanic with lots of very good advices. But you know my engine is stock...
My aim is not to win some extra HP, just I think the look of A dual snorkel element or an open air element are great, better than the stock one.
You know my problem in fact is really simple. Should I install my sual snorkel element or an open air element. Nothing else for the moment.
Why is it so hard to install a dual snorkel? Who has ever done it?
