shorty headers and y pipe?

Hey guys im thinking of putting on some shorty headers and a y pipe on my 89 305 tbi camaro. Eventually id like to probabley swap in a 350 and i know these mods will help then. I just wanna know how much some shorty headers and an aftermarket y pipe will actually help with a stock motor? and how much of a difference will there be in sound? right now i have 80 series flowmasters on it. thanks for any help

Re: shorty headers and y pipe?

i got a little more from the hedman shortys and y pipe. i also run the same flowmaster and it sounds great. use quality gaskets though all around. ive had no problems since i put them on a few years back. dropping in the headers though took some time and work. but it was worth it.

Re: shorty headers and y pipe?

The exhaust is the most restictive part of these cars. My friends and I have had good luck with the headman headers and y-pipes. Some think they are made a little cheap. Make sure you get the headers and Y made for the 350 IROC as the main pipes are bigger. The same goes for the catback. If you just put a flowmaster muffler at the rear you still have the tiny 2.5" main pipe.

Full exhaust can be worth as much as 30hp or more with tuning to take advantage of the flow.

Hooker 2055's and Aerochamber catback FTW!!! Sorry I'm alittle biased but I love mine.

Re: shorty headers and y pipe?

Check out the "free tune" thread sticky at the top of the page. Basically there is free software and cheap hardware that allows you to go into your chip and change all the parameters to match back up with what your engine really wants. It's the same thing Jet,hypertech, and the like do only you'll be custom tuning to your engine.
