Which fuel pump?

I have a 1992 camaro with a 305 engine that is probably going to need a new fuel pump. Someday I will probably put a stock 350 engine in it. Will the 305 pump be ok or should I get one for a 1992 caprice with a tbi 350 engine or even some other pump? I have read a lot of posts but cannot seem to find an answer.

Re: Which fuel pump?

My personal preference is the later vortec pump. It is also the factory 89 Turbo Trans Am pump. It was used in the late 90's in vortec truck/suv applications. It costs about 5 bucks more than your factory replacement on average. It gives a higher fuel volume and pressure than our TBI or TPI pumps give.

I have successfully used this pump to cure driveability problems in TBI trucks time and again. If you are looking for OE upgrades, this is the way. Otherwise, you can get a nice aftermarket unit like a Wallbro.

Your regulator on your TBI unit will still give a good pressure even with the new pump. You only need to adjust it further if you are trying to tweak everything to perfection. It will run fine in stock trim for stock applications.

Re: Which fuel pump?

I've bought two Walbro fuel pump kits from http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/ and highly recommend them.
I first bought the 255 lph pump kit but it was too much for my fuel pressure regulator, so I replaced it with the 190 lph pump kit. I believe that the 190 lph pump will support something like 400 - 500 hp at 13psi.

The customer service and technical support was great. I called on a Saturday with an install question and got through to someone who walked me through my problem.

Re: Which fuel pump?

I replaced mine with a Walbro 255 after the stock one died. It works great!

Good luck, its a fun job getting the tank out.

Re: Which fuel pump?

The walbro 255 flows so much that it can cause the fuel pressure to creep up during low flow demand due to the fact that the regulator and return line are somewhat restrictive. The 190 would be a better choice for a stock TBI unit. The later fuel pressure regulator units that GM had for the high pressure TBI systems have enlarged passages for high flow pumps, but these are hard to find.

Re: Which fuel pump?

I am in the same boat. I need a new fuel pump and not sure which one. I am looking for a higher volume pump to solve a pressure issue, but the whole car is stock. So my best bet is the 190? And i hopefully wont have a "too much volume" issue?

190 lph is about 50.1 gph which is good enough for gas equipped engines up to about 450 HP. The limiting factor (from volume stand point) is a stock 3/8" line with its many transitions and sharp bends. For a stock application it is more than adequate and circulating too much fuel through the system increases its temperature and vapor pressure.

Re: Which fuel pump?

Do I run the risk of any damage to the engine or TBI with the walpro 190lph or should I just get a stock replacement kit. I ask because the car has been sitting for 13 years in a garage. i found it and brought it home, but I just not keeping fuel pressure and I cannot find a leak outside the tank so my next move is the pump and lines inside the tank

Re: Which fuel pump?

I dont want to jack the thread but, what FPR does anyone recommend if I wanted to upgrade that as well.

I heard the Holley has real bad problems and reliability. What others are out there? Just for future reference. Thanks guys. Hope you get your problem fixed kaupca

When working with FI fuel delivery system I would be very cautious of older hoses! Since the car sat for a long time I would consider replacing all rubber (or flexible hoses) in the fuel delivery system. Today's gasoline is loaded with aggressive cleaning agents and depending were you are a good dose of methanol or ethanol. Polymer blended rubber hoses tend to harden with age and after sitting idle for a while tend to crack once re-subjected to normal operating conditions. The last thing you need is a fuel leak supplied by a high volume FP! This is a recipe for a fire - ruins your day!
Whenever I work on 60's - 80's cars the very first thing I do is to replace anything that has a rubber hose in the fuel system. Modern SAE 30R7 hose (good up to 50PSI) can handle modern gasoline, whereas older staff is rather questionable.

As far as FPR are concerned there are couple of threads that I recall that address this issue. Make sure to replace both spring and diaphragm - for 190 lph stock FPR will be OK, 255 lph is too much and you do not needed for TBI system to be happy. As always use common sense and be realistic about your end goals.

Re: Which fuel pump?

Rf,

Thanks for the good advice. I am just getting into this car thing and I am litterally learning as I go. Between this web site and the hayes is about all I have. Thanks a gain for the advice and I will get myself a few feet of hose.

Re: Which fuel pump?

If you replace the rubber fuel line from the pump to the hardline on the sending unit make sure that you get hose that is rated for fuel submersion, I believe it's SAE J30R10. If you don't the hose won't last and you'll be dropping the tank again.

Re: Which fuel pump?

Good advice I will make sure I do that. Not really sure what I'll find when I drop the tank, but I will be sure I have extra of everything. Even if I dont need it
