Yea several air cleaners will fit. I have the Edelbrock Pro-Flo 1000 on my car. It's cheap, functional, flows well, and the foam insert is washable.
You do not need to use the carb stud holdown bracket that comes with it. You will however need o eyeball where the center is cause you have to punturs the TBI stud through the filter and then thread it into one of the grille openings. This is fairly quick and easy to do. It has plenty of clearance and flows 1000CFM which is more than enough air. It is a drop base but it has a very smooth turn down. It's not tall enough to make it a non drop base. There are no issues getting air to the the throttle bores though. If you have an injector spacer and a modded TBI unit there shouldn't be any shrouding even with the drop base.

Re: open element air cleaner
Im sorta thinking he's just like this guy in my town that works at car quest that "this wont fit", "This wont work", "you cant do that". a guy who thinks he knows it all, but doesnt know anything about engines.. ahaha.
anyway, I have a edelbrock open element too, works really well, eventually im gonna get a whole new open element, cause the one I got the paint is coming off, has spot, and air cleaner needs to be replaced.

I got a 14 X 3 Chrome one from Autozone that had a flat base. Took the spacer ring off the top of the throttle body and it fit great. Just watch for it rubbing the wires going into the distributor. There should be enough room but good to check.
