Looking to put a new comp cam in my TBI need help with questions tho...

Ok i have a 1988 Trans Am with a 305 TBI and am putting a set of vortec heads and intake mainfold on it, plus im looking at a 08-502-8 comp cam xtreme energy series camshaft with a an Edelbrock True roller timing kit. Will that camshaft fit my car and if not what type or series will. I already bought an Edelbrock Performer Plus Camshaft w/ hydraylic lifters but i was told its a flat tampered camshaft and i need a hydralic roller camshaft. Also anyone know of a diff. type of throttle body that i can mount on my engine? here are some pics of my engine.

why would you want a different kind of throttle body? a simple adapter plate on top of a Vortec carbed manifold and you're set. make sure to modify your TB linkages for correct geometry. failing to do so could be the death of your trans if you dont have them right.

Re: Looking to put a new comp cam in my TBI need help with questions tho...

i would personally look into a bored TB, like those from extremeefi, turbo city, or cfm-tech as you'll get the benefits of the 454 TB, with the ease of plug and play, not that you'll really need a bigger TB for your 305. radiusing the upper lips on the TB bores should be more than adequate.

modifying your TB linkages will require modifying the brackets that hold your cables, so that they put the cables in the proper position, in both height, and distance in refrence to the throttle body.

So long as the cam is a roller for an 87+ SBC it will fit. Its a fair ammount of cam for a 305, so tuning will be manditory, and you may want to get EBL or something else other than the stock ECM. By the time that cam starts making its peak torque, your already off the ends of the spark and VE tables in the stock ECMs.

Re: Looking to put a new comp cam in my TBI need help with questions tho...

but that requires me to have a labtop w/ a cable that i have to plug into my car and i dont have the money for it.. so why does it have to be so damn difficult?
----------
All i wanna do is find a cam where i wont have to change out my ecm or radically tune anything, to where i can still use my stock rollers and lifters but still get good performance. anyone know of any kind i should be looking for?

If you use Vortec Heads on a 305 you will need to have them reworked because they are 64cc and your 305 will lose compression and you'll lose what you gain if you don't. The Intakes are different for Vortec Heads and are a lot more expensive. Try getting a set of HO TPI heads or S/R Torquer heads for a 305 from World.
In about 3 weeks I'll have a CFM-Tech 620 cfm Throttle Body in great shape available when I convert my 350 to a Carb setup. Just use the Injector pod off your stock TBI. I also have a Edelbrock 3704 TBI Intake (non-Vortec) and a LT1 roller Cam with .418/430 lift that are new. You can use the stock lifters with the Cam if they are in good shape. I'll sale the whole setup cheap just to get rid of them. If interested E-Mail me at Cfionnla44@comcast.net and I'll let you know when everything is available.

Changing a cam to one step more radical should not require a new chip. But you will end up with a stock tune that does not take advantage of the new found power. That is unacceptable to many of us. If you are unwilling to tune that new cam and find the power consider having a "chip" burned by a Tuner For Hire as a bare minimum.

Re: Looking to put a new comp cam in my TBI need help with questions tho...

I also found a Vortec setup inludes used heads and intake manifold (casting numbers ending in 059) off a 96 305 out of a Z71 4x4 for 150 bucks. whats the stock cc on my 305 from the factory? But as im seeing it right now, im thinking about holding off on getting a cam becaus ei already have a shift kit, headers, exhaust and intake to put on plus underdrive pulley kit, True Roller timing kit, Theromaster Perf. Chip and an ac bypass pulley. So with all those installed i think ill be ok without a cam for the time being. Until i really decied to put a cam in and actually have all the cash i need to buy the cam, rockers and everything thing else i need to run it. But i still might get a bigger TB and do some supsension work until summer when im making more money. still need a paintjob at the moment also. If anyone knows of any other bolt on parts that will help me out let me know....
