A Bolt Fell in to My Throttle Body?????

Ok, little explanation needed about how it happend. But while working on my car a bolt fell down in to my throttle body, I did not know this until I drove about a block and started hearing a knocking noise and my car died (like it was getting no fuel). The injectors are still spraying fuel down.

It sounds like it would sound if there was a bolt in a clothes dryer.

What do I do?
Will the bolt eventially pass in to my exhaust? cat/muffler?

It will not pass through the exhaust, and you better hope and pray that it didn't get into a cyl, if it did, it is new motor or rebuild time.

Best thing to do, is pull the intake manifold off, and see if you can find the bolt in the intake, or in one of the intake ports on your head. Check and make sure it didn't screw up a valve. If you got lucky, and no valves are messed up, and it didn't get into a cyl, then thank your lucky stars, and buy a lotto ticket. Chance are, if it was a small bolt, that the noise you heard, was the bolt in one of cyls, beating itself between your piston and the head, in which case you are looking at a rebuild, or a new motor, depending how much damage there is.

Sorry man, this is why we don't put bolts near opens that we can drop them in.

Re: A Bolt Fell in to My Throttle Body?????

My experience with this was not a good one. One of the fuel injector pod bolts [one of the three] cam loose and went into the engine while running. I knew nothing about it until the engine started knocking. Long story short, cracked the cylinder wall in a 3 month old GM L31 block.........

Keep us posted on the news. I am just curious as to what happened. (As far as damage) Hopefully you can pull the manifold off and the bolt will be sitting right there. Good luck.

Re: A Bolt Fell in to My Throttle Body?????

I am not 100% sure that is what happen but that is what I am assuming. The person who owned the car before me put on k&n airfilter/intake. It was manufactured to have three screws in it that come out of the top of the throttle body and they plugged the third hole with a small bolt that I think fell in while doing a tune up.

I will give more details about the damage done when I get more.

Re: A Bolt Fell in to My Throttle Body?????

yeah I dropped one of the injector pod bolts into the throttle body once but the butterfly valve caught it and I was able to pull it out, would have been a major pain if it fell into the manifold

sorry to hear that happened, hopefully it's still in the intake, but if you said you heard a knocking sound then I'm expecting the worst, cylinder/piston/head/valves are trash
