TBI Rebuild Kit?

Anyone ever use this kit?

My Tbi sticks when I first start it up after sitting awhile, after the first initial press of the pedal its fine, but when the Maro has sat awhile it will stick the first time. I have searched posts and found that is a common problem with tbi so I figured I would try a rebuild. Never done it before though.

Back to the topic has anyone used this kit?

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

Yeah, I've used it. I recommend using this kit during a complete tune-up... or in my case, my injectors had an awful spray pattern.

I wouldn't recommend it for a sticking issue. That sounds more like a linkage problem, or maybe one of the throttle blades got dinged and now theres a metal to metal bind.

Don't think this kit will fix your problem but I highly recommend getting it if your TB has never been re-gasketed/re-o-ringed (which is basically what this kit does).

Good luck.

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

Thats another reason why I was thinking about using the rebuild kit, I doubt it has ever been rebuilt, I've never done it, and I doubt any of the previous owners have either. Thanks for letting me know you have used this kit, It seemed abit cheap, so I wasn't sure if it was a good kit, again Thanks!!

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

well if you rebuild it to find/fix the sticking problem, when you reassemble you are going to need the rebuild kit anyways.

take apart the TB, see if the throttle blades are hitting anything, oil the shaft, and check the pedal/linkage with it disconnected from the throttle body.

I don't recommend removing the throttle shaft though, that spring is a bitch and a half

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

Thanks for the advice, I have done a visual inspection of the blades by just taking the breather off and then advancing the blades, there is no apparent rub that I can see. From other threads that I have read on here others have had the same sticking problem and after the rebuild it was fixed, plus I doubt its ever been done on it, so it could use a rebuild after 103,000 miles.

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

Might just be gunked up inside, or missing return spring, or as in my case, a kinked throttle cable. BTW: I rebuilt my TB after 180,000 miles.

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

If that was the case, I would think that the throttle would stick more than just the one time after the car has been sitting awhile. After the initial start up the throttle sticks on the first press of the pedal and thats only after sitting many hours or over night. After the first press it doesn't stick anymore. I figure it may be gunked up, but I don't think its anything mechanical at least not that I can see, could be wrong though. I figure it could use the rebuild and clean up anyway, I don't think its ever been done.

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

It isn't the brand that I recently used (Sorenson), but it didn't look any different and was inexpensive ($35-40), too.

While your at it, check the throttle shaft & body for wear or movement in any direction except to rotate. If it does, that might also be the source of your sticking throttle problem. If it is, search this forum for information on a TBI throttle shaft repair kit.

Re: TBI Rebuild Kit?

I literally just finished doing my TBI rebuild and I have got to say that it is definitely a must do in terms of a "tune-up" type repair. I USED TO have a problem with a low idle even with the timing advanced to probably 10*, on initial start up it would hesitate when giving throttle and smoke a little and just run like s**t until it was warmed up, and I've already replaced the entire ignition set up including distributor, cap and rotor, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, intake manifold gasket, idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, and still had no effect. So I got the TBI rebuild kit which has all the ORings and gaskets and filters for the fuel injectors and the throttle body, and POOF, upon start up the idle shot to 1500rpm so I rechecked the timing and now with everything clean and new the timing advanced even further (about half inch away from the timing bracket) due to the correct air ratio now, so I had to retard the timing to probably 6 or 8 degrees(for more than stock power). So as a recap THE REBUILD OF THE TBI FIXED MY HESITATION AND LOW IDLE PROBLEM. Just thought I would share for anyone who has second thoughts. The kit also came with a picture of how everything goes together IN ORDER. It wasn't the exact same throttle body in the pic as my car but where the gaskets and O-rings go was identical, JUST BE SURE TO READ THE DIRECTIONS, it was very helpful. This was also my first time disassembling a TBI unit but it all went smooth.
