Re: GM High-Tech Performance Readers...

I have that issue. Congrats on getting in ...it was also nice to see someone else determined to "stay true" to the 305 TBI. I'll be damned if I abandon my 305 block and TBI.

The LO3 is a money pit, but you get a sense of pride out of working on one that doesn't come with replacing it for a 350.

Re: GM High-Tech Performance Readers...

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. I too can say that I get satisfaction out of working on the LO3 that I do not get from other cars (I have also owned a 2000 LS1 equipped Z28 for 3 years). I have never really been able to understand why it is such a taboo to mod a LO3. The whole point of hot roding is to take an engine and squeeze every last drop of power you can out of it. I really don't see why the platform should matter in this case the "small 305" and the TBI induction. I think everyone would agree the Turbo Buicks and Turbo TA's of the 80's were a pretty sweet car despite having V6's. I actually love the challenges of starting with a non-high performance set up offers cause it makes the rewards that much more satisfying

I have a lot of gearhead buddys here in town who have been very anti-TBI and have let me know how horrible LO3's are for as long as I've owned my RS (9 years). I just can't make them understand that I don't need to make 500 hp out of this car to be happy. I just want to take what I have, in this case the 305 and TBI and make it as good of a performer as I can for the budget I have to work with. If the end result is 250 hp then I still took a car and made it more powerful and faster than it was off the show room floor, don't know how that makes me or any other L03 guy on here different from any other hot roder. Besides, if I do decide I want 500 hp there's always my LS1 ; ) Long live the LO3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree ...I would add, though, that if you want to put some effort and money into it, you can get impressive hp out of the L03. After a certain point (which seems to be about 350 hp or so) it might not be stock enough to be referred to as an "L03" anymore, but a 305 block nonetheless. Fast355 always amazes me with what he has done with his 305 block.

Yeah, I figured you could get alot more power out of the L03. I do think there's a line you cross at some point in all the modding where the car loses it's identity. A few months ago I was reading a magazine article on a L98 with the Stealth Ram on it.....but it was referred to as a L98. For me as soon as the L98 plenum intake and runners were ripped off it wasn't a L98 anymore....bada** car yes, but L98...not for me.
