help rebuilding 305 engine

I have a 1990 camaro rs with a stock 305 tbi with a 3.42 posi rear. The engine has started to take a dump and rather than put in a 350 I have opted to restore her 305 with a few mods but I don't know where to start.she needs new heads because the stock ones are going as well as the head gaskets because she is overheating. I don't know where to start to get some new performance heads for her that will bolt right on. I was also thinking of switching to a carb which would mean a manifold switch as I understand. I also am looking for a 700r4. I have no where to start to find what I need. I want her to be fast but not insane.

Well you're on the TBI board so you're going to hear keep the TBI which I wholeheartedly agree with. I hate to say it but the search function works great. But if you just want a fairly quick TBI car without breaking the bank to much here's a list. If you're going to do a rebuild and you want to keep the stock stuff here's what you can do.

Get the heads rebuilt. Opt for a bowl blend and a three angle VJ with some back cut valves.
Know what power level you want. For a small upgrade, 1.6 roller tip rockers
You have many cam choices you can use but remember if you want to swap cams TUNING is a must. Here are some popular choices in the TBI world.Starting from smallest to largest.
L31 cam
88-89 L98 cam
93-95 Lt1 cam
PRODUCTION LT4 cam
ZZ4 cam
LT4 HOT CAM

Exhaust is an absolute must. Headers with a 3inch catback will do you very well.
Do you have an auto or a stick? If auto a popular choice is an 96+ 4.3 S10 converter. From what I believe they stall at about 2000 to 2200 depending on torque levels

you already have gears so you good to go on that part.

others will probably chime in but it really depends on what your end result will be.

Re: help rebuilding 305 engine

maybe take into consideration a vortec setup. vortec heads and intake work great with tbi motors. some good cam selections were stated above.

Re: help rebuilding 305 engine

Where can I find these vortec heads and manifold? What does everyone think about 4bbl tbi units?
