TBI bouncing idle??????
Ok so ive had my camaro for like a year now and ive finally gotten around to being so sick of this bouncing idle that im dead determined to fix it, sometimes its when the car is warm sometimes its when its cold but it will start up and then the idle will drop like the car wants to die, then bounce up, and right back down repeatedly. What causes this????
I've got an 89 RS with a 305 TBI. The only thing not stock about it is i have my fan run to a toggle switch because they never wanted to turn on by themselves without the AC override being on. I got fed up and bought a relay kit and wired the fan to the switch, i find it much simpler than before personally, i replaced all 3 of the sensors and my fan relay, traced the wires to check for opens and got NOTHING.
THe bouncing idle happened before i did the switch and now it doesnt happen as much, i wanna know what i can check to fix this, ive heard soemthing about the IAC but i dunno
Any ideas guys?

Try and clean your IAC. I did it today, seems a little better for me (diff symptoms).
Go here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...check-out.html And go to post number 6. Just to clarify, IAC off, wrapped in rag, pins jumped, ignition on, in that order...

any way i could get pics? vaders link is dead, so am i understanding that i remove the iac (wherever it is) put it in a bag, jump the terminals on the ALDL like when im gonna flash codes, then turn the car on and the thing disassembles itself!? Then i clean with lighter fluid????? Like zippo fluid? and then reassemble and replace?

Dead on! Of course unplug it long enough for you to take off the IAC. Then I would consider that a step by step.

Sorry bout the pic, used it from another thread and edited it.

hm... sounds like itll be fun, anyone able to explain how and or why it disassembles itself when you flash the codes? im sure it has something to do with the IAC resetting itself to check for a code but jeez ive just never heard of that lol wish everything was that easy....
brake bleeding : just open the lines and flash your codes lol
tranny......not as simple, let it fall apart then have fun with the worlds most frustrating puzzle

Re: TBI bouncing idle??????
Well here is one previous post pertaining to the subject:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...plug+shaft+iac
What I was concerned about was reassembling and reinstalling it. Sounds kind of 'questionable'. I will have to feel more confident about that part before I attempt to deal with it.
And I had to laugh when you were describing your frustration with the cooling fan ... you described EXACTLY the frustration I had. I eventually made a manual switch but later removed it. I now just turn on the non-functioning air-conditioner and force the fan on. I => WILL <= eventually conquer this problem. I mean it. Really.

To get the pintle back in, all I did was turn it... Angled it so it gave a bottle to bottle cap effect...

Re: TBI bouncing idle??????
ok so what are the EXACT steps because the post by vader is different it says to pull it out and disassemble it by hand, carefully rocking the pintle til it comes apart, clean it and put it back together with some oil, now if i remove the iac will i have to reset the minimum air position too?

yeah i think there might be soemthing to the iac, the previous owner never really got into the motor, and before he had it, his daughters punk boyfriend had it and he was....stupid Ill check the iac then if that doesnt work ill move onto iginition.

Pull the IAC out of the throttle body base, put it in a sandwich bag, put a rubber band around the wires and bag. You won't lose the pintle. I do this every 6,000 miles.

WHAT? How was the switch wired? It's supposed to be in parallel to the relay, in case the relay malfunctions. Sometimes, in stop and go traffic, I'll flip my fan on to drop the temp if it's NEARING 220*.
Also, your post was very hard to read.

Re: TBI bouncing idle??????
sry lol it was getting late and i was pretty tired. but i dont remeber how it was wired i think it was wired directly to the fan from the toggle switch. i just know i could not figure out wat was wrong so i took it too a chevy dealership and thats wat they told me was wrong lol so i had them wire it back to the factory way and ran a whole lot better lol
