Carb to TBI

New guy here. Another message board sent me here, so I hope you guys can help me.

I have a 350 that I aquired from a 78 Blazer. I was told it was a "crate motor" but other than that I have no clue on engine specs. I do know its a 4 bolt main, block came from a 78 2500 pickup. Supposedly has high nickel count. And the pistons say "made in canada". I have pics of anyone is interested. I think its probably a stock build, but not certain.

Anyways, right now I'm runing a edelbrock 1406 carb and edelbrock performer intake. This is in my 88 Toyota 4Runner by the way. Hopefully you guys wont hate me too much for not having a Camaro

I recently aquired a TBI setup from a 95 G30 Sportvan. I grabbed the complete intake/TBI/computer/pump and the wiring harness complete up to where it goes into the body at the fuse box. I also grabbed the o2 sensor. The only thing I did not get was the knock sensor and ESC (i diddnt see it, thought it was bolted to the back of the head but it wasnt there)

The computer is a 116197427. Is this an OK computer to use? I want to use this as "fuel only" since the rest of the functions I do not need. Will I need to get a chip or have the computer reprogrammed? I plan on adding a knock sensor if that will help. What about the speed sensor? I have a Toyota trans, I dont know if there is any way to make the GM sensor work with my trans. It doesnt have one to begin with. Do I need to have the speed sensor? What will it affect if I leave it out?

People are telling me to get a 7747 computer. Would it be easier to use this comp, or use what I have already?

If I add a knock sensor, where and how will I mount it to my early block? Ive heard using a fuel pump block off plate and welding a bung to it.

Should I use the stock TBI manifold, or get an adapter to use with my edelbrock performer? I am after low end torque mainly, as this is a 4wheeling truck.

Any other tips or tricks?

Thanks guys, hope you can help.

Re: Carb to TBI

Im sure someone else will reply but! The 7427 is one of the best PCM's you can use for tbi. It can also be converted to run multiport efi if the need arises. I would recommend using it to control fuel and timing as well. It will make life easier in the long run being able to tune your spark timing. You will just need a tbi to carb adapter plate to run with whatever manifold you have. I would also look into Chip tuning for your self. Its fairly in expensive and it will come in handy being able to tune you own set up. Do you have a Laptop or access to one? Check out Moates.net for the hardware needed. There is a ton of info and very knowledgable peaple on this site that should be willing to help you out. Im not sure about the speed sensor but im sure some one will chime in. Hope this helps a little??

Re: Carb to TBI

Thanks! Its good to hear I got a good computer!

I have a laptop. Just dont have a lot of money! I should have said that I'm looking to do this as cheaply as possible. The truck is just a weekend warrior 4wheeling truck. I dont need a lot of tuneablility, just needs to run smoothly. I probably will only throw a cam in it and maybe some vortec heads down the road. I'd have to slap in some 1 ton axles before I build serious power!

Thanks for the help. I'll check out the moates site.

It will cost you less than $150 to get everything to beable to burn chips etc. And if you do put a cam into it plus heads later you will really wish that you could tune the PCM. I would try and talk to Fast or Dimented on this site about the other info you need. Also look into reading the stickies, there is a ton of info there.

Re: Carb to TBI

Just got done with my swap. A member here mods stock ecms that can datalog and it has flash memory so you can program on the fly. It's about 400 if you have him assemble it or you can do it yourself for cheaper.

dynamicefi.com

You have to have a knock sensor, o2 sensor, coolant temp, ESC, and map sensor for almost any FI to work properly. Use your manifold with an adapter. Have it control the timing as well. I would not recommend just controlling fuel when they are made to control both synchronously.

Another option is a megasquirt computer. Do a search on that as well.
