Building My First TBI Motor 383 with Vortecs got Questions

I'm real excited about this motor and still new to TBI, I'll list what I'm building first followed by my first questions.

This motor is for a 4x4 Toyota FJ40 My goal for it is a steady Idle, power off idle and a nice pull throughout, no major hit, just steady like a train and run off of pump gas.

Parts so far:
4 bolt 1 piece seal 350 block bored .030" over
eagle 3.75" stroke crank for 5.7" rods Internally balanced
Flat topped speed pro 383 pistons for 5.7" rods
5.7" rods from an 50hr LT1 motor (motor was in a Mastercraft boat, water frozen block, parts look new and still have assembly paint on them, rev limiter was @ 4500rpm in the boat)
Stock roller lifters plates rods from same motor
Stock '94 LT1 cam from same motor (freebie willing to buy an ideal cam if one presents itself for the setup.)
1.5 stainless roller tip rockers for vortec head
stock 062 vortec heads w/new springs
GM TBI Intake for Vortec heads, got it real cheap so didn't look at options
Felpro head gasket set HS 7733 PT-16 (.040" thick?)
2" rams horn manifolds going into a single exhaust, real tight engine compartment.

1. First off the '94 LT1 cam what is the intake duration on it? Partially answered dur 202 207 lift .450" .460" LSA 116 any one know the Advertised durations on this cam?

2. The compression ratio? My understanding when I bought parts was that static CR was going to be 10.0:1 I'm coming up with 10.63:1 assuming .025" deck to piston (Haven't assembled yet to check it, block is stock) and that the pistons are -3.4cc. Partially answered as well my figures were based on the wrong data waiting on the cam values to confirm.

3. Which TBI throttle body? I was just going to buy the 670 cfm Holley unit before I started researching programming and tuning. I Have gotten myself confused with no direction really at this point on what throttle body and injectors to buy for this motor. I will be using an external fuel pump to match.

4. EGR hook up or nay? I was planning to hook up the EGR on the premise gas mileage would be better. Is there a noticeable difference or any other benefit to hooking this up? I don't have inspections in my state.

5. I know this is getting a little ahead but when I order the EBL system do I get to choose what ecu to get, and which one would be best for this setup. I haven't delved into the tuning arena to much yet, taking it slow letting it sink in, lots to learn and so far the EBL system looks nice.

Forgot to add thanks to everyone who helps out here, I've been trolling for weeks learning.

Re: Building My First TBI Motor 383 with Vortecs

Several options for the TBI base...

I would go with a 7.4L TBI unit with either 65# (5.7L cop car part # 17084327) injectors or 90# (7.4L part # 1708430 or 5235231) injectors. If you use the 65# injectors your fuel pressure will need to be 25-30psi. So, you'll need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator that either mounts on the injector pod in replace of the stock regulator or buy the Aeromotive 13301.

Your intake will have to be bored to 50mm ($50 at machine shop) to match the TBI base or you can buy an adapter (Trans-Dapt) which allows you to adapt a 50mm TBI to a 42mm-44mm intake. Either way it will cost you the same amount of money.

Depending on the TBI base you get you might need a mounting plate. Some of the 7.4L TBI bases have a larger footprint on the bottom for the IAC passage ways which means the mounting surface on 5.7L intake is not large enough.

I am doing that exact thing right now with my project. I have some really nice injector pods and a new 7.4L TBI base that's been powder coated with a gloss black and a few other things that you might need. I accumulated a little more than i needed for this project, lol.

Contact him and he will get you set up with a really nice EBL flash system. I am upgrading my system to this in the next month.

Re: Building My First TBI Motor 383 with Vortecs

Thanks for the quick reply, guess it would be obvious to ask the source about the ecu's, I may be interested in that body, I do the same thing buying to many parts. The intake is for a TBI so maybe just the bores need to be opened up. I own a machine shop so all that stuff is just my time.

Pretty sure my compression #'s are all whack being based off the @.050" specs instead of the advertised, I just can't find solid specs anywhere on the LT1 cams. It might be best to check it with a degree wheel. Worst case after looking some more is I might have to buy a different cam.

Re: Building My First TBI Motor 383 with Vortecs

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong 454 body but it appear to more to it than opening the holes up to 50mm to match.http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/...0,0,0&format=0

edit:^^^ Well after some more investigating I noticed that body above has something mounted to the bottom of it and that a 454 is indeed pretty close as far as pics go to the original.

It just looks like a Holley body with it's 2" holes in it would fit the manifold cleaner and flow the same air as the 454 body and would need the bigger injectors? no adapter plates or odd gaskets that way. After reading a bit more seems very few like the Holley and it will not let you swap injectors easily.

Pm me a price and maybe some pics and we'll see what about marking that off my list.

That picture looks like a 7.4L mounted on an adapter for a carb manifold. I don't recommend the Holley TBI. Their injectors suck. Sorry, but they do. I have not seen anyone who was happy with theirs.
