carb to tbi?
carb to tbi?
i currently have an 86 ta 305 qjet set up i would prefer to go tpi with it but i imagine that would be more costly but in the mean time i would like to at least go tbi and i wondered if anyone knew exactly what parts i would need to make this swap work i know fuel pump and the thortle body its self but otherwise im not sure

Go with TBI - more common, parts are readily available on JY and parts stores.
IIRC 86 camaro was available with TPI motor in the Z28 and IROC-Z - which means that all fuel system plumbing should be already there (Supply, return and vapor). More than likely you'll need to drop gas tank and replace FP with higher pressure unit (do not go too crazy with 255 lph pump) - a stock TBI delco or carter unit should do the trick.
Pick a complete TB system from 88 up donor (TB, sensors, wiring harness and ECM ) - it should drop in place of CCC based system. Lieve Q-Jet intake in place and get adaptor plate (many suppliers) or get TB specific intake for 86 and later. Just find a complete unmolested system on a JY (E-bay is full of rip off pricing!).
Suggest that you make a check list of items needed - this work has been done already by Howel and others that offer complete itemized parts list. Questions - shoot away..

Re: carb to tbi?
I've done this on several vehicles: my own '75 C20 with dual tanks and on my friends '73 Nova. Truck required fabrication of a complex fuel delivery system due to dual fuel tanks. In the end fuel system resembles that of B737, but works like a charm. There is a youtube video - search RFmaster.
This past summer I helped my friend to convert his old '73 nova from a two barrel to a TBI. We had to take gas tank out and install baffles into it to keep fuel from uncovering fuel sock since he was planning to use this car for some "spirited" driving. We could have bought a new 1st Gen tank setup for EFI, but he had a body at the radiator shop that opened gas tank and spot welded baffle box around fuel sock. We also installed new 3/8" fuel line and used original supply for fuel return. Original fuel pick up assembly was modified with new fuel return fitting. External in-line fuel pump was used (Carter), but if I had to do it again I would go with in tank setup - quieter, but that would require new fuel pick up assembly out of late G body (have to investigate that). The rest of conversion was rather straight forward. We had to punch 52 mm hole in the firewall for harness (this was easy since engine and trany were out for "refreshing"). ECM was temporarily mounted inside glove box.
Rebuilt engine was broken-in with a carb and following that we installed TB stuff on. TB setup was fully sourced from a local pick your part and came of '89 B body equipped with 305 and 700R4 which found its way into Nova. O2 sensor and TPS are new since these tend to be questionable. In the end the lowly Nova is getting about 24 mpg on a freeway and fun to drive since it has 3:08 gears. Rebuilt 700R4 helpes keeping highway RPM low enough for great fuel milage and low 1st gear gets that car out of the hole rather quickly!
Original 7746 ECM had 305 calibration and my friend's Nova was sporting mildly built 350 (nothing fancy, but with a cam that can be used with C3 ECM - i.e LSA of about 114 degrees) which has about 17in-Hg at 650 RPM idle. I had a spare set of 62 lb injectors and we popped updated EPROM to compensate for additional cubic inches (305 vs. 350).
To keep long story short engine fire up after we primed fuel system and checked for leaks, but we had a rich condition which was due to a leaky header gasket. Once that was taken care of BLM's settled down around 130 to 135 - a bit on a lean side, but close enough to be drivable.
